Censorship:
Censorship is alive and well in the good old U.S. The University of North Carolina, Wilmington, censored a large part of the "Century Project," a chronological series of nude photographic portraits of women and girls from the moment of birth to nearly a hundred years of age. All images of minors were removed. The Project had traveled for 18 years without any problems. The administration at Bowling Green State University, Firelands, ordered the removal of a sculpture commenting on the sexual abuse of children. In protest, the gallery director closed the whole show.
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (July 27) -- Parents in Florida are complaining about a sculpture of a nude family outside a shopping center west of Delray Beach. Parents of children who attend a nearby elementary school say the bronze statue is inappropriate, and the PTA president e-mailed parents Wednesday asking them to complain. news.aol.com/article/nude-sculpture-delray-beach/587171

ECONOMICS: So, how are the rich collectors faring in these hard economic times? Collectors and owners of large art collections are using their art as collateral to obtain needed cash. A New York company that gives out loans against fine and decorative arts has seen a 40 - 50 percent increase in business. The art works are appraised and treated as collateral just like a car or home. Some of the art owners have been burned by Ponzi schemes. Even small museums and other institutions who have seen their endowments cut are also using their collections as loans to survive. Christie's International has reported that they are down nearly 49% from the same period as last year. In the U.S. Christie's sales have fallen by half to $462.9 million. It's tough out there for everyone!

Tragic cuts to the Illinois Arts Council Info From artsalliance.org
"ARTS FUNDING CUT 46% IN FINAL FY10 BUDGET Up to $5 Billion Shortfall Still Exists...
The budget slashes the State's allocation to the Illinois Arts Council to $8.5 million--a 46 percent cut from FY09. The Council is the state agency that provides financial and technical assistance to artists and arts organizations. Illinois' investment in the arts is now a mere 66 cents per person. On top of this steep cut, the Office of Management and Budget placed a 5 percent spending reserve on the Arts Council (as well as other state agencies)--effectively dropping state funding for the arts to $8.1 million in FY10. Illinois' investment in the arts is down 57 percent since FY08 when Governor Rod Blagojevich's draconian cuts to the arts and arts education occurred. The Illinois Arts Council is taking a bigger hit than many arts agencies in other states....
Impact on the Illinois Arts Council Of the Illinois Arts Council's budget, $6.2 million will be available for the Council's grant programs (as opposed to its operations). How will the Arts Council use and distribute this $6.2 million? That's the question that will top the agenda when the Council convenes on September 10, 2009. The Council is expected to suspend some of its programs. In a message to the field on June 12, Shirley Madigan and Terry Scrogum, Chairman and Executive Director of the Council respectively, suggested ArtsTour, Youth Employment, Literary Awards, Master/Apprentice, Open Deadline, and other programs were at risk for suspension. The Arts Council must also address how the humanities and public broadcasting will fare in FY10. Traditionally, the Council's budget includes line-items that specify the amount of funding for the Illinois Humanities Council as well aspublic radio and television. This year, because the Council's budget is a lump sum, it is unclear how the humanities and public broadcasting will fare. Impact on Arts Education Funding The Arts and Foreign Language Grant Program will retain $2 million in funding in FY10--half of its FY09 funding. The grant program is the only program through the Illinois State Board of Education to support the efforts of schools and school districts to strengthen arts education. To preserve funding for this small, but essential program, the Arts Alliance met with ISBE leadership, key lawmakers, and Governor Quinn's education staff and ensured that decision-makers heard from arts education stakeholders.... All in all, 27 programs were zeroed out in ISBE's FY10 budget. Next Steps for Arts Advocates Because the budget includes a shortfall of up to $5 billion, the governor and General Assembly will have to return to the table later in 2009 to continue the conversation. Over the next few weeks, the Arts Alliance will continue to meet with legislative leaders and advance new tools and information to help make the case about the impact, assets, and needs of the arts sector in Illinois. While legislators are on recess and in their districts, the Arts Alliance encourages you to: - Schedule a meeting with your state representative and state senator in your district to discuss the on-the-ground impact of these cuts - Tell your story to local media outlets - Keep the Arts Alliance informed of how state budget cuts and other factors are affecting your community...
