Peter Jones Gallery "The Grand Goodbye

Arlene Raconcay
was among those to say Good-Bye to Peter Jones
Gallery and thanked Rebecca and Peter Jones for all the great art over the years. They will be sorely missed. It was a bittersweet evening.

Muralists beware of city alderman acting like art critics.  A mural by Gabriel Villa was painted over by the city because Alderman Jim Balcer of the 11th ward did not like the mural that was on private property at Morgan and 31st St. He said the mural depicted everything that was death and it was a threat to the community. According to the ACLU this was an illegal act and Balcer did not give the property owner time to appeal.  So, muralists, I guess in the city of Chicago you can only depict happy murals!

The new wing of the Art Institute of Chicago has opened.  It has 264,000 square feet of beautifully lit space, and is designed by Renzo Piano.  If you didn't get there during the free days, and if you are not a member, be prepared to pay the $18 fee.  Since thousands of people roamed through the new addition during this free period, James Cuno the director was so pleased he and some board members are considering making it free, some time in the future!  But don't hold your breath!

President Obama and his wife Michelle are changing some of the paintings in their living space.  A call went out to various museums, galleries and collectors asking for loans of more modern work than what is there now.   According to the Wall Street Journal, "For collectors, it was as if a call went out that the Obamas needed to fill their fridge.  The grocery list of artists just rolled  out," said a white house spokesman.  The President can hang any thing he wants in his own space, but any works intended for the White House permanent collection goes through strict scrutiny. Unfortunately it usually does not accept works by living artists for its collection because "inclusion could impact an artist's market value.  So??? What's so bad about that????
