| Greetings! |
2010 is just about over and here at AEDC we are preparing for the new year. While this past year has been tough for most businesses, during the last couple of months we have seen an increase in loan inquiries and applications. Highlighted below are some current success stories. |
|
Several AEDC clients expand in 2010 |
While many businesses spent the last year looking for ways to survive through these economic times, several AEDC clients have taken advantage of opportunities to expand.
After 25 years on Highway 101, The Mill Yard will open their new store in Arcata. You don't even have to wait until January to visit! The new store, opening on Monday, December 27, is located at 4949 West End Rd., off Hwy. 299.
Jessicurl recently tripled its operations, expanding its Arcata-based factory and administrative space to 6,000 square feet to help grow distribution of Jessicurl in new markets.
Holly Yashi opened a new store last month in its design studio, featuring gifts and a viewing window, giving guests an opportunity to see jewelry being made on weekdays.
Even as many businesses are struggling, AEDC clients are innovative and tenacious, even in a challenging business environment, they continue to thrive. Congratulations!

Teen Business Fair gives young entrepreneurs advice about how to start a business | |
About 20 students attended on each day of AEDC's two-day Teen Business Fair at the Boys and Girls Club Teen Center in Eureka. There, they learned how to write their business plans, and learned skills to start a business. E-Club Members from HSU worked with the kids one-on-one to build their plans.
Participating students came from schools all over Humboldt County, including Academy of the Redwoods, Arcata High School, Eureka High School, North Coast Prepatory Academy, Six Rivers Charter School, Zane Middle School and Zoe Barnum.

Madeira Seaman talks about her business, Maditude Adjustment.
Students got to hear from Monica Topping, local DJ and business owner, and Madeira Seaman, a fourteen-year old entrepreneur. After hearing stories and brainstorming ideas, the students got to work with their mentors to develop their own plans.

HSU E-Club member, Michael Wheeler, works with a student at the event.
On Friday, students got to learn marketable skills, like ironing, gift wrapping, car washing and pet sitting. Students also got to make an elevator pitch about their business. Those who made a pitch had business cards designed by Economic Fuel, and printed by Scrapper's Edge.

Kelly Miller from McCrea Nissan worked with a group of teens to teach the finer points of car washing.
Eleven students participated in the Hospitality 101 Customer Service training on the following Saturday. College of the Redwoods presented a full day of "Shining Up Your Skills," and worked on customer service, team building and personality skills, and resume and interview techniques.
With business ideas from jewelry making, to gift wrapping to odd household jobs, several students left the event with direction about creating their own future -- and their own spending money.

2010 has been an economic challenge for our six-county serving area, but during the past year AEDC has been able to obtain several grants that have allowed us to increase our available loan funds by over $2.5 million. Our challenge for 2011 will be to get this money lent out to our community and working to expand or start new businesses and help create new jobs.
We are able to make microloans from $5,000 to $50,000 as well as commercial loans from $50,000 up to $1,000,000 or more. We partner with banks, credit unions and local municipalities to leverage there loan funds.
