"LIVE UP" as Leaders
 |
Jerry Nance
|
By Jerry Nance PhD, President, Global Teen Challenge
Leaders are the role models that others look to as an example. Those following will live up to what they see. That is why it is critical that we as leaders "LIVE UP" to what we have attained in Christ.
PHILIPPIANS 3:16 (NIV); "Let us live up to what we have already attained."
King James Version: "Let us walk by the same rule; let us mind the same thing."
New American Standard Bible: "Let us keep living by that same standard we have attained."
The Living Bible: "If you fully obey the truth you already have."
Amplified Bible: "Let us hold true to what we have already attained and walk and order our lives by that."
Christian maturity involves acting on the guidance that you have already received. We can always make excuses that we still have so much to learn. The instruction for us is to live up to what we already know and live out what we have already learned.
In Philippians 3:17, Paul said, "Join with others in following my example. Take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you."
Paul went on to say, "Many live as enemies of the cross of Christ." (vs. 18) These are people we should not follow. How do we recognize them? What do they do?
According to Philippians 3:18-19 (NIV)
- "Their destiny is destruction"
- "Their god is their stomach" - ME, ME, ME!
- "Their glory is in their shame." They take pride in what is shameful.
- They are enemies of the Cross.
What pattern was Paul speaking of when he said, "Follow me"?
Paul said, "Let us "LIVE UP" to what we have already attained." What have we already attained?
- We have attained salvation and sins forgiven.
- We have attained partnership with Christ.
- We have attained the promise of heaven.
- We have attained the power of the cross.
- We have attained the power of the Spirit of God
Paul was referring to the believer's walk-to be a disciple of Christ. He was challenging us to LIVE UP to it.
Philippians 1:6 (NIV); "Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion."
God has begun a good work in us, and now we need to live up to what he has done. We need to let God's love become more and more a part of our life (Philippians 1:9). We need to stand firm in our commitment to God and not be frightened by those who would oppose us (vs. 27).
God's Word provides a clear picture of what we need to "live up" as leaders.
- New life: Romans 6:4; "We are therefore buried with Him, raised unto new life."
- Faith: 2 Corinthians 5:7; "We live by faith, not by sight."
- Spiritually Alive: Galatians 5:16; "Live by the spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature."
- Love: Ephesians 5:2; "Live a life of love, just as Christ has loved us."
- Christlikeness: 1 John 1:7: "Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did."

Sustainability
By Rick Souza, Director of the Sustainable Solutions Department
I was in Cape Town, South Africa, a few years ago working with leaders of the ministry in that area of the world. I will never forget what one man said to me at the conclusion of our time together. He said, "Thank you, Brother Rick. You have not only fed us, you have taught us how to fish." That is what the sustainability aspect of the Teen Challenge ministry is really all about.
We strategize with each center to help develop:
- Stewardship (cultivate good stewardship principles)
- Accountability and integrity in funding
- Set budgets and develop business plans
- Explore and develop strategies for sustainability
- Identify local needs for services of products
- Develop micro-enterprises
Below are just a few examples of different types of micro-enterprises that are helping to support Teen Challenge ministries around the world.

El Salvador Teen Challenge - Bakery
The bakery in El Salvador is operating with two shifts per day, producing 400 small containers of pastries that are sold on the street by staff and students every morning for $1 a container. Most days they will sell all 400 containers, bringing in $400 per day, grossing $9,000 to $10,000 a month, and netting about $5,00 0 to $6,000 a month. When Gerardo took over in January, they were making 40¢ on the dollar, and now they are making 60¢ on the dollar. Gerardo hired a full-time pastry chef who keeps the production moving. Students are involved in the production and are also learning a skill.

Cuba - new opportunities
We just returned from Cuba. The Holy Spirit is touching multitudes of people throughout the nation. New opportunities are arising to assist in micro-enterprises. We are grateful for this opportunity.

Teen Challenge London - selling car parts

Teen Challenge London UK operates an internet business to sell used car parts. This business provides funding to cover the daily operation of the Teen Challenge program. They also set up a special fund where they invest 10% of their profits to help other Teen Challenge centers establish micro-enterprises to help them fund their programs.

Sustain Hope partnering with GTC
Funding a Teen Challenge ministry is always a challenge in any country. Another means of assisting centers in sustainability is through our partnership with Sustain Hope. This Christ-centered ministry specializes in finding sustainable solutions utilizing local resources in areas of agriculture, alternative fuels, water and sanitation. Their team of experts will visit an area, study local markets, do many hours of research and gathering of information to become familiar with in-country resources and business potential. They also assess , evaluate and make recommendations on the potential uses of the Teen Challenge property to enable the ministry to become more self-sustaining. The ultimate goal is to give recommendations of various options for micro enterprise development and work with a center to cultivate a source of revenue that will be a steady and consistent means of supporting its work. These options should also be beneficial to the students/interns in providing vocational skills and, hopefully, a sense of accomplishment through working and providing for the center. Global Teen Challenge and Sustain Hope will be assisting Teen Challenge Honduras in October with an initial assessment and seminar. To visit the Sustain Hope website click here.
