Leadership and Trust
 |
Jerry Nance
|
By Jerry Nance PhD, President, Global Teen Challenge
The issue of trust is enormous for those of us who have been in leadership for any period of time. Having trustworthy leaders who are working along side of you in the ministry makes the difference in how much gets accomplished as well as how the journey is along the way. Over the last 20 years I truly feel blessed to have had such wonderful leaders join our team or be raised up among us.
I have lived my life believing in the best in everyone. I always want to give everyone a chance to prove themselves trustworthy. When you consider the message of hope that we offer at Teen Challenge, we have to believe in second chances. We must always believe that there is good in everyone and do our best to trust them. However, experience tells us that trust is earned. It comes when one does what is expected of them over time.
Disappointments have been a part of the process, but human nature is true no matter the culture. People make mistakes, they make bad choices and they revert to past habits to manage current issues. No matter how much you invest in them, no matter how well they have done over time, some people just let down their guard and revert to old ways that break trust.
Why are we surprised? Why do we get so discouraged when this happens? Even Jesus had a Judas as well as all of his disciples abandoning him on the night of his arrest. Jesus felt the pain of broken trust. It hurts.
Some time ago I spoke about finishing well, and trust is one of the characteristics of one who finishes well. Being a leader of integrity and keeping our prayer life and spiritual life in place over time is what keeps our walk with Christ pure and it builds trust. We must first be trustworthy if we want our staff to be trustworthy.
I read the following from one of John Maxwell's books and wanted to share it with you.
John Maxwell said, "People today are desperate for leaders, but they want to be influenced by someone they can trust, a person of good character. If you want to become someone who can positively influence other people:
- Model consistency of character. Solid trust can only develop when people can trust you all the time.
- Employ honest communication. To be trustworthy, you have to be like a good musical composition: your words and music must match.
- Value transparency. If you're honest with people and admit your weaknesses, they appreciate your honesty. And they are able to relate to you better.
- Exemplify humility. People won't trust you if they see that you are driven by ego, jealousy, or the belief that you are better than they are.
- Demonstrate your support of others. Nothing develops or displays your character better than your desire to put others first.
- Fulfill your promises. One of the fastest ways to break trust with others is in failing to fulfill your commitments."
May God help each of us consider the 6 recommendations that John Maxwell suggests.

GLOBAL INTERNSHIPS
The Global Internship Program provides an extraordinary opportunity for Teen Challenge graduates, university students, as well as other volunteers to have a hands-on missions experience around the world. The intern is assigned to a Teen Challenge center that fits their learning goals and interests. If you, or others in your center have a desire to experience this kind of ministry, you will have the opportunity to live out your commitment in a practical

way.
The Global Internship program offers several different types of missions opportunities.
- Short term missions trips: 1-2 weeks
- Internship: 3-month increments
- Missionary associate: 1-2 years
The Global Internship office can help coordinate those interested in short term missions trips of 1-2 weeks.
Application Process and Training
Those who are interested in serving overseas on a 3 month internship or longer missions service must complete the Global Internship application process that includes their testimony, their God-given calling, and references. Teen Challenge experience as a staff member or as an intern is a prerequisite to doing an international internship. If approved, a packet is sent out that gives direction on how to raise their needed funds. The Global Internship office will help identify TC centers overseas where the intern can serve.
Interns are required to participate in basic missions and leadership training before they will be approved for an overseas internship. Please contact the Global Internship office for more details on these training requirements.
Heather Newton's internship story.
The summer before my senior year of college, I had the incredible opportunity to serve at the Teen Challenge center in the Czech Republic. Upon arriving, I quickly realized that the service I would do there would require complete dependence on God. I taught the Group Studies for New Christians material at the women's center, loving the opportunity to help the women gain a firm foundation in the Bible and their faith.
 | Ministry in Prague |
I was also able to participate in many of their other ministries, including their coffee house, street ministry, and their outreach to gypsy children in downtown Prague. It was incredible to be God's vessel of love. Truly it was a life changing and faith building experience. When it was time to come back to the USA, I felt as though I would leave part of my heart that would never be regained.
It is an opportunity that I would recommend to anyone, because God truly does amazing things when his people are willing to take a step of faith.

Global Intern Seth Price reports on Guyana trip
I was given a great opportunity this week to see and experience the process of team-building and preparations for Teen Challenge ministries in Guyana. I wasn't sure what to expect for this week in relation to the training. It was a surprise to discover how much still needs to be done and what it takes in the process. It was an honor to get to know John Steigerwald from Global Teen Challenge and to get such a

great wealth of knowledge from him. Meeting with Freddy Biesum, Teen Challenge director from Aruba, was also a gift from God. I felt a strong sense of brotherhood while staying with John and Freddy, having opportunities to pray with each other and share in the mission to make disciples. On top of that it was a very good-humored and down-to-business time of fellowship. I also had the honor of meeting Pastor Cheris Allard, director of Teen Challenge from Grenada. I was warmed by her heart for men in the prisons and those struggling to make it on the outside. I was shown the need for help in bringing discipleship to them and giving them a chance grow in God's grace. The workshops with John and the board of directors were educational and enlightening. I learned about relationships and how important it is to be honest with your brothers and co-laborers, and to build a culture of trust through healthy debate. The workshops were a chance to see and learn how to map out a plan of action for getting TC ministries off the ground.

This trip to Guyana has been a gift from God, to meet and get to know John, Freddy, Cheris, Easu, the Guyana TC Board, and some very gentle and kind people from Guyana. I will be so grateful to share God's love and word if I return here, expecting to see lives, families, and communities changed by the presence of God. Seth Price Intern, Global TC

MAPS Construction - helping worldwide - touching lives
MAPS continues to save ministries around the world millions of dollars each year through volunteer construction. Started in the 1960's Missions Abroad Placement Services (MAPS) had goals of connecting the layman with the mission field and partnering with the missionary's vision. This in turn had some wonderful impact in advancing ministry and seeing the gospel preached round the world. But one of the unplanned results was the overwhelming number of volunteers who felt the call to full time missions. So even though they planned for just a week of laying brick or cutting boards, God planted a new vision in their hearts. That story has been told hundreds and maybe thousands of times. GTC MAPS is an arm of this ministry that focuses on construction projects for Teen Challenge centers all over the world. It has been with that same vision of partnering with Teen Challenge Centers around the globe that we invite you to make use of the GTC MAPS office and its resources to see your building project move forward. Our goal is to assist you through networking and helping connect with volunteers while at the same time assisting in construction steps as volunteer teams join forces. We know often that someone needs to help hold up the hands of the leader as he casts the vision. We attempt to do just that as you put plans into place to see what God can do in your location. One MAPS team member, David Ray, sent me his thoughts from a recent trip. As you read this you can see how lives are changed when we share the need and let God put the pieces into place! TIGLIN, IRELAND TEEN CHALLENGE After researching my ancestry for a couple of years, I had the desire to visit the homeland of my ancestors, Ireland. My family and I have since vacationed there twice where we fell in love with the country. Since that time, God has been drawing us back there - for His purpose - to fall in love with the people of Ireland. Ireland is a very secular country with a population of 6.4 million people, with less than 5,000 of those being evangelical Christians. To be called "Christian" in Ireland is more of a political affiliation, whereas, true Christians distinguish themselves by calling themselves followers of Christ or believers in Christ. The country has been ravaged by centuries of political and religious violence but most recently has enjoyed a time of peace. My wife and I were invited to go with Abundant Life A/G from Jackson, Georgia, on a MAPS trip to Tiglin Teen Challenge which is located in Wicklow, Ireland, about 20 miles south of Dublin. My wife and I have been on several MAPS trips in the past but never together. The focus of most of my trips has been construction and Mary would work with the dental team because of her background as a dental assistant. Our focus for this trip was construction; hanging and finishing drywall, pouring floors, scraping and painting among other things. But the construction became secondary to what God had planned for us. This was the first MAPS trip we had been on where we actually had the opportunity to build relationships with those we came to minister to. In Ireland everyone spoke English. We heard powerful testimonies, such as: Mikayla, who was rescued out of drug addiction and prostitution. Then there was Allen, who was living on the streets of Dublin as a heroin addict just days before we arrived. By the time we were ready to leave, he had been beautifully transformed by the power of the living God. Their lives were likened to the debtor whom Jesus had forgiven much, because their love for Him was so great. The 20 men and 6 women of Tiglin worshiped the Lord for what seemed like hours on end. They kept singing, "There is power - in the name of Jesus - to break every chain, break every chain, break every chain." We witnessed those very chains being broken in their lives. God showed me three things that He is doing at Tiglin Teen Challenge - Rescue, Restoration and Revival. The first two were for the students. God is rescuing young men and women from addiction, abuse and abandonment. He is restoring health, hope and happiness to broken people. The third, revival, is for the country of Ireland, that is spreading through the lives that God is radically saving and transforming into the likeness of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Top of Page |
Everest Base Camp Trek - Raising funds for Teen Challenge Construction teams
By Jon Connally, GTC MAPS Construction Director
As Director of MAPS for Global Teen Challenge it was an awesome experience for me to raise funds for Teen Challenge (TC) through a trek to Base Camp at Mt. Everest in Nepal in April
 | Jon at Everest Base Camp | 2012. For almost three weeks we had the glorious time of seeing God's creation throughout the Himalayas. This trek provided designated funds in the areas of TC MAPS construction projects in different locations as the needs arise. These TC construction projects are accomplished through volunteer teams that travel to destinations all over the world. Thank you to all who inquired and sent prayers and best wishes.
We arrived in Katmandu, Nepal as a team of four on April 5, 2012. Our connecting flight into the most dangerous airport in the world departed two days later with a safe landing into Lukla, Nepal. I can tell you nothing is as exciting as the Lord's work. I was reminded of that as we landed at a 1800 foot runway in between mountains with cross winds and a granite mountain at the end of the runway. Whew! What a thrill as we landed, saw our yaks and porters load up, and took to the 30 mile trail to Mt. Everest Base Camp! The next ten days took us through wonderful villages and valleys, tea houses and tall bridges, culture and crevasses, snow storms and snapshots. Those snapshots give some idea of the beauty of Nepal and the Nepalese people. It's been calculated that if you trek to base camp you have equally climbed Everest twice. We enjoyed that thought as we arrived at the 18,000 foot elevation to awesome views of God's creation. The challenge was difficult, but the accomplishment was certainly worth it!
As I returned home and began to share about our trip, it has generated interest in scheduling another adventure trek for

2013. At this time we are reviewing some treks for a June or July departure. Please contact me if you have an interest in taking part in a trek that would benefit Teen Challenge, give opportunity to travel with an awesome group, impact your world and provide a memory of a lifetime. For more information email me at jconnally@globaltc.org. Each team member raises tax deductible funds that pays their way and benefits Global Teen Challenge at the same time. Let me challenge you to get outside your comfort zone and do something exciting next year as we bless the Lord together.
This office continues to serve through assisting teams in destinations, logistics, fund raising ideas, team recruitment, and PRAYER! I look forward to the chance of meeting you at a MAPS construction project!
