TC in Europe has a long history. Since its beginning in 1969 until now, the vast majority of TC programs in Europe were started through street outreaches we have called "coffee houses." The residential rehabilitation centers, for the most part, grew out of these early evangelistic efforts. The Europe TC headquarters - first called by the name "Continental TC"- was a training and coordinating hub helping launch national TC programs in many countries.

Today there are over 100 ministries in 34 different countries. There are also over 75 coffee house ministries reaching out to the hurting.

Greetings!

It is Springtime here in the USA and we are enjoying all the beauty of the season.

Europe Teen Challenge is our featured region this month. Tom Bremer has a special report on the latest news from the ministries in Europe.

This month we are introducing a new feature, our monthly prayer list. It can be found in the "Quick Links" section. Please join us in praying for needs from Teen Challenge ministries around the world.

We thank the Lord for all He is doing all over the world through this ministry.

Jesus invested in raising up Sons!

Jerry Nance
Jerry Nance

By Jerry Nance PhD, President, Global Teen Challenge

As I read the Gospels with the question in mind, "how did Jesus invest in his disciples?" I find one reference after another that clearly shows how Jesus purposefully mentored his disciples.

In Mark 6, starting with verse 7, Jesus sent his disciples out after empowering them with the authority to cast out evil spirits. He took time to instruct them on how to go out, what to take with them, and how to respond to those who accepted their message and how to respond to those who didn't. Jesus was investing in their growth as leaders of the early church.

Then in Mark 6:30 we see the disciples coming to Jesus to report all they had done and taught. They have stories to tell and they eagerly share how God used them.

Note verse 31: "because there were so many people coming and going, they didn't even have time to eat." The miracles were drawing massive crowds, the needs were overwhelming, the crowds with needs were such that they didn't even have time to eat.

Notice what Jesus did in verse 31. He said, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." In verse 32 we see the disciples reaction, "So they went away by themselves to a solitary place."

Let's break this verse down.

Jesus says:

First - come with me

Second - by yourselves

Third - to a quiet place

Fourth - and get some rest

First: Jesus said, "come with me." He wanted time away from the hectic non-stop ministry to hurting people. He wants some time to be alone with those he had chosen as his disciples. He called them out and he invested in them personally.

Jesus said-we need time together.

Jesus made it a priority to take time with his disciples to train them, to speak into their life and to connect them to His Father. Jesus used parables to teach them the principles of the kingdom of God. He ate with them, they witnessed his prayer life, they witnessed his implementation of God's purpose for his life. He modeled Christian leadership. He modeled compassion, grace and forgiveness. He modeled teaching in the synagogues, healing the sick and raising the dead. He modeled confronting the religious leaders of the day.

In Mark 6 he was speaking to all 12 of his disciples. But in Mark 5:37 we see Jesus taking only Peter, James and John with him. Sometimes Jesus took only the three of them into his company for investing in them the deeper things he wanted to share. He invested in them as individuals. He raised sons.

Second, Jesus said, "by yourselves." Jesus wanted alone time with them. Jesus was selecting them and making time for just them in the midst of the crowd. Now this speaks to us about how important it is for us to spend time with our key team leaders.

If you want your leadership team to follow you and to embrace your leadership, it is critical that you invest time in building a relationship with them. Your relationship is developed by spending time together in purposeful ways. Jesus simply drew attention to this as a need for both he and his disciples.

Third, Jesus indicated the location where they could have a time for quality communication. He said, let's go to a "quiet place," or a place of solitude away from the crowd.

This is so challenging when there is so much to do and the demand on your time is so pressing. But, here we see Jesus taking his disciples away to a quiet place. The noise of the everyday challenges of this ministry is so loud, that it makes it hard to hear from the Lord. It is difficult to take the time to get alone in a quiet place with our leadership team. Jesus set the example. We need to follow it.

Fourth, Jesus said, "get some rest."

Do we need any counsel on that point? WOW! Jesus said to his disciples, "come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."

Jesus saw the need for rest. Jesus was communicating his priorities to his disciples. We all should learn from Jesus' example.

Jesus set an example of the importance of solitude, for prayer, for relationship building, for a quiet time away from the norm and put an emphasis on a place of rest.

As leaders we need to pay attention to these truths as they are unfolded to us. Life passes so fast and the challenges of this work can be so distracting from our ongoing relationships with each other and with our relationship with Christ. We need time with our key leaders and we need time in places of solitude to get rest.

May we listen to the Holy Spirit as we continue to lead others and be reminded of the Jesus model of raising up sons.

Europe Teen Challenge - Alive and Well

by Tom Bremer, Global TC Regional Representative in Europe

"I'm ruined! The Kingdom of God is in me! I will never be the same!"  So were the words of a student in one of the Teen Challenge programs in Europe as he came to the realization that the "old man" was passing away, and something new and miraculous was happening in his life. It is words like this that express the heart and soul of the TC work both here in Europe, and everywhere the Holy Spirit is at work changing lives with what I like to call : "The Divine infection."

A Fellowship of the Spirit
Europe TC is a fellowship of the Spirit. It is not a corporation with a board of directors only, but more important, it is a group of national programs and leaders which/who have voluntarily decided to enter relationship with one another for the express purpose of "stimulating one another to love and good deeds", and "bearing one another's burdens".  After 43 years, this fellowship is not only alive and well, but it continues to grow. It is the culture of Teen Challenge

in Europe.

Expansion through Adoption

As evidence of this culture many of the National TC works have helped establish TC's in other countries. In the 1980's, TC in the Netherlands helped put TC Poland on the map. In turn TC Poland helped TC in Belarus at its very beginning. Now TC in Belarus is helping to train others in the Russian-speaking countries. A few years ago, TC in Latvia was in the process of building a new rehabilitation facility. All of the programs in Europe contributed to an offering for new windows in the Latvian center. Some TC's in Europe have had great influence beyond their own borders. Most notable are TC Portugal - helping establish TC Macau, Guinea, and Angola, and TC in the UK helping in India and Swaziland. TC Czech is involved in Slovakia, Moldova, and Israel. Just one month ago, TC Czech organized the construction of a security fence around the new women's center in Arad, Israel. Teams from Czech and North East Scotland TC's came to do the work. The list goes on and on. I believe that God is well pleased with this fellowship!

Current Economic Crisis

Many of our TC programs in Europe are experiencing the pinch of the economic crisis. In some countries where we received government funding we have lost it. Though it would seem natural to panic in such situations, we see the hand of God in all of it. On one side, it is more difficult to run the TC programs, but on the other side, the lack of funds finds its way to addicts on the street. We are beginning to see more desperation and a greater motivation to change among the drug users. This is the environment for a miracle!

2012 ETC Conference Rimini, Italy

Each year we have two gatherings of leaders and workers in Europe. In April of 2011 we held our annual conference in Gdansk, Poland. The conference theme was "Life, Family, Ministry". The annual Fall 2011 Leaders Meeting was hosted by TC Romania in Bucharest. This was a family time where we shared our victories and challenges with one another and had many times of prayer together - A real fellowship of the Spirit.

Our annual Europe Teen Challenge Conference will be held in Rimini, Italy April 19 -22, 2012. The theme is: God's Word: Alive, Active, Sharp! (You are all welcome to join us. See registration link in Conference section.) Our Fall Leader's Meeting 2012 will be hosted by Teen Challenge Slovakia in November.

New Projects in Europe

At this writing, we are working on a number of projects. TC Kazakhstan has sent a couple to Bulgaria to start a TC work there. The TC women's center in Israel is in its infancy. We are attempting to connect with a Christian rehabilitation work in Greece. Several staff training seminars are scheduled around Europe. In addition to these, Europe TC is playing a major role in establishing a fellowship of Christian works across Europe. This is being done with The International  Substance Abuse and Addictions Coalition (ISAAC) out of the UK. This year in May we will take part in the first ISAAC Europe Conference.

We are mindful that a lot of activity is not the key to successful TC ministry. So, all of the events we sponsor and participate in are purposeful: to maintain and promote the fellowship of the Spirit so that we can "ruin" more lives with the Divine Infection!

May God richly bless all of you in your works around the Globe for Teen Challenge.
