This issue highlights Africa and the opportunities and challenges facing us as we seek to expand the ministry of Teen Challenge. We hope you pray with us that God will open doors of ministry in the Muslim countries of northern Africa all the way to the southern tip where AIDS is devastating a whole generation of young people.

Lessons From Elijah Part 4

"Managing your Jezebel Moments"
Dr. Jerry Nance

Jerry Nance

By Jerry Nance PhD, President, Global Teen Challenge

Over the last three months I have been discussing some of the lessons we can learn from Elijah. This month's lesson is one that I am sure all leaders face, but we don't always feel so free telling others about. [If you missed the previous parts in this series, click the following links.] Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.

Our lesson comes from I Kings 19:1-7. Here we see Elijah coming off of his major victory over the prophets of Baal. Let me remind you of some of the facts: God had spoken to Elijah to prophesy against Ahab and there was no rain for 3 years. He had been supplied food and water by the ravens, a widow had helped him and he had rebuilt the altar of the Lord and called fire from above to consume the altar. Then he killed 450 prophets of Baal.

Think about it! In one day he saw the completion of a 2 to 3 year process of God judging Ahab, fire falling from above because of his prayer, and he had the privilege of killing the enemies of God. It was an amazing day!

Teen Challenge in Swaziland, Africa

Doug Wever, GTC Regional Director Africa

Teen Challenge in Africa is operational and/or developing centers currently in Kenya, Swaziland, Tanzania, Liberia, Uganda, South Africa, Angola, Mauritius, Guinea-Bissau, Ethiopia, Botswana and Zambia. We also have invitations to start Teen Challenge in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Malawi, Ghana, Egypt, Senegal, and Sudan.

Our goal is to develop Teen Challenge ministries that are culturally relevant to each country. We want to see each center become financially self sustaining. An excellent model of this happening is in Swaziland, a nation of about one million people.

I recently met with Kevin Ward and Andrew Le Roux of Teen Challenge Swaziland.  The ministry in Bulembu, Swaziland, has merged with Teen Challenge Swaziland.  This merger brings TC fellowship, training, and TC ministry model to Bulembu while increasing the existing total of children and adolescents in Teen Challenge Swaziland dramatically.

AIDS occurrence in Swaziland is the highest per capita in the world. I mention this because the epidemic drives a highly unique but true expression of the Great Commission Teen Challenge ministry. Some important data driven by AIDS for the Kingdom of Swaziland include: AIDS Stats

AIDS continues to devastate the Kingdom of Swaziland.  Witch doctors have a high level of influence in the national culture. They have stated that the only cure for AIDS is to have sex with a virgin. This has led to horrific rapes and infection of children two to ten years of age.  Fifteen year olds currently have a one in ten chance of reaching the age of thirty-five.

Teen Challenge in Swaziland is ministering to many children who are orphans because of AIDS, drug addiction, and abuse. With the Bulembu merger, Teen Challenge is now reaching out to 450 children and teens in Swaziland. They have started several businesses to provide a base of support for their ministry. Their goal is to be fully self-sustaining by 2020. In the mean time, they are seeking to make up the financial shortfall through a child sponsorship program. [Click for child sponsorship info]

training sessions which are then uploaded to the iTeenChallenge.org website for use by Teen Challenge centers around the world. His work also includes preparation of videos which can be used to communicate the ministry of Teen Challenge in various media settings.

Mark and Candace started their world mission careers as short-term volunteer missionaries in Belgium working with International Correspondence Institute, now Global University.  In 1990, they joined the International Media Ministries (IMM) team where they worked in many facets of creating programs for broadcast in various countries on three continents.  During their 12 years at IMM, they were on the production team that produced four children's series and three Bible story series used for teaching adults.

In 2003 they relocated to Spain.  During their time in Spain they trained media teams in local churches across the nation.  They established several local media teams that are still in operation.  They also partnered with musicians to create music videos for young adults and children.  Mark also helped missionaries and para-church groups with their varied media needs.

Both Mark and Candace have a strong missions' commitment.  They both use their creative gifts to establish a global witness through media.

The End Result

By Jon Connally

GTC MAPS Construction Coordinator

One of the great joys of serving the Lord is that your investment in the Lord has eternal computations that often are never known in this lifetime.  Because you gave in an isolated unknown circumstance someone's life or faith in God was changed.   You put the seed in the ground and moved on.  But that little acorn grew into an awesome tree that impacted a generation.Brick Laying  Someone has said you can count the acorns in a tree but you can't count the trees in an acorn.  That exponential figure is the end result.  But only the Lord knows the lives changed, touched and transformed.

One of the joys of my life is to see people invest their talents through the MAPS ministry here at Global Teen Challenge.  That takes place through volunteer construction projects in other countries where centers are established, enlarged, and developed through this ministry.  Your talent might just be what is needed to see the big picture come together for ministry around the world.

This office can assist in finding you a team or helping you form a team with destinations and plans and cost.  Solo assignments often can also be arranged for short term placement.  Please contact us to see what opportunities exist in serving today.

One of the most exciting things we might ever do is to become a farmer on foreign soil planting seeds.  Our calling is to take our offering, our lives, our talents and place it before him.Trekking to Everest  The end result is in his hands.  Praise The Lord !!!

Let me also invite you to join us in our MAPS endeavor to TREK to Mt. Everest Base Camp in Nepal in April 2012.  This awesome trek is taking place to raise funds through sponsors that will assist in Teen Challenge projects around the world.  You too can be a part of this phenomenal team!  You can contact me at jconnally@globaltc.org or 1-706-315-7076 for additional information.  Everest Brochure

country reports of the miraculous things God is doing through Teen Challenge ministries in the region.  There were powerful times of worship and intercessory prayer for each country as well as TC people with urgent needs. The food, fellowship and interaction among those attending was a blessing and encouragement to all.  Special guests from Costa Rica and Argentina added an extra blessing to the Conference.  Duane Henders, Norbert Schenhals, Daryel Erickson and John Steigerwald led the Conference and David Isabelli led the worship and taught.

Panama:Duane Henders and Norbert Schenhals recently visited Panama City, Panama where they had an invitation to meet with the Assemblies of God leadership to present plans for a Teen Challenge ministry. In the meeting Rev. Frank Archbold was approved to lead the ministry, a committee was appointed to pursue legal registration and GTC was invited to begin training designated staff for a TC ministry!  God is at work in Panama!
