Greetings!

Do you sometimes feel alone? Jerry Nance writes about this issue in the context of leaders. We also want to encourage you to send us a letter to be included in the Book of Appreciation for the Wilkerson family. Special thanks to those of you who have already sent in a letter.

In this issue we give you updates on recent staff training in Jamaica and Chile. You also have the opportunity to participate in a short term missions trip to China in August, or to be part of a MAPS construction team to a TC center.

We pray the Lord will direct your ministry in new ways of increasing your effectiveness in helping people find Christ and the new life that he offers to all. May God bless you and your ministry.

Lessons from Elijah, Lesson 1

Sometimes the Lord leads us into Lonely Places

By Jerry Nance PhD, President, Global Teen Challenge

Let me give you the setting of the story we are about to review. Ahab was the 19th king of Israel and he was more evil of all the previous kings. Elijah the prophet was called by God to go and to speak to

Dr. Jerry Nance

the king about the curse that would soon come on Israel.

1Kings 16:30 Ahab did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any of those before him.

1Kings 17:1 Elijah says, "As the Lord the God of Israel lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word."

Elijah comes before the most evil king Israel had ever known and prophecies that it will not rain for 3 years. It is clear that the Lord trusted Elijah to be his messenger. Elijah must have been in tune with the Lord to hear his voice. He must have been a man of prayer for the Lord to use him as his mouthpiece. Elijah was in the will of God, but look what happens next.

Jamaica Teen Challenge launches on-going training

Daryel Erickson and Gregg Fischer, GTC training staff, recently made a trip to Jamaica Teen Challenge to teach a type of "Base Camp" basic training for all TC staff.  During 3 days the 16 participants had classes related to the history, philosophy and core values of Teen Challenge.  Also they received training on the characteristics of addiction, how to teach and counsel students, the importance of group and personal studies and more.

Jamaica trainingIt was a good time of teaching and interaction with the staff and interns.   At the end all of the participants received a certificate for "New Staff Orientation."   The TC Jamaica Director, Anthony Richards said that he wanted this kind of teaching for his staff to make sure that all of them were on the same page and then they could build their own staff training on this solid foundation of basic training.

SMALL BEGINNINGS, SMALL TEAMS

Update by Jon Connally, Construction Teams Director

Brick Laying2

As Teen Challenge continues to open new doors around the world we will continue to see needs to fill and teams to send.  If you have never put together a team we would love to help you start and would encourage you to not discount the importance of a  small team.  We have resources on team building, team organization, destinations and pertinent information to make your small team a big piece of the puzzle in the kingdom of God!

Scripture reminds us that small beginnings are not to be looked down on.  In fact, for many of us in ministry, it is the common thread that runs through many of our lives.  It is the recipe that often brings greater success later on as we continue on this Brick Layingjourney. The five smooth stones, the lad's lunch of a few loaves and fishes, the small measure of meal and oil, and the faith the size of a mustard seed all speak of the little portion that is in our hands.

We know what it is to plan with no money and start with no help.  God honors small beginnings that sometimes translate into small teams.  That can be said for MAPS teams also. MAPS ministry is the construction arm here at GTC that allows volunteers to donate their skills and services to centers around the world.  Often it can be one unique talent or skill that is needed at a remote location or one small team that can respond quickly and efficiently.

For information on upcoming trips please forward your questions to jconnally@globaltc.org or contact me, Jon Connally, at Structural Systems, 706-315-7076

There is much excitement and anticipation for all that the Lord has in store for the future on Teen Challenge in Chile as a national committee is forming.
