Greetings!

Question:  Is this the best email address to use in getting the Leadership Link to you?

If you work at a Teen Challenge or similar ministry, we want this monthly e-newsletter to get to all your staff, not just the director. Please send us those email addresses, or use this link "Subscribe to our Newsletter!" to sign up new email addresses.

In this issue we are highlighting a recent Teen Challenge conference in Ukraine which was opened up to other faith-based rehabilitation programs. We encourage you to do the same.

We encourage you to submit new testimonies which can be included in future issues of the Leadership Link. Please email them to gtc@globaltc.org

May God's blessing be on you and your ministry.

A Leader's Character Matters
By Dr. Jerry Nance

Dr. Jerry Nance
John Maxwell wrote an article entitled, "Repair Character Faults." In it he sited Acts 12:1-3.

When you read you read these verses you see Herod the king stretching out his hand to harass the true followers of Jesus. Then he killed James the brother of John with the sword. And because he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also.

Ego drove King Herod of Paul's day, just as it had driven his father and grandfather. They all desperately lacked character. Herod's lack of character provides many examples of what not to do as a leader. John Maxwell suggested some character issues that Herod had.

1. He mistreated his own citizens.
2. He made decisions based on popularity.
3. He acted irrationally in difficult times.
4. He harbored anger toward others.
5. He sought power out of insecurity.
6. He projected an infallible image.
7. He was blinded by his ego.

To improve your character and build a solid foundation for your own leadership, you must:

1. Identify where you are weak or have taken shortcuts.
2. Look for patterns.
3. Apologize to those you have wronged.
4. Stay teachable and rebuild.

It is no different for each of us as leaders. We must be watchful that we do not fall into the same traps as Herod. We must always be careful of allowing the values we hold dear to be lost in our times of desperation and need. We must hold to the truth of God's word, treat people with respect and always stay humble and teachable.

May God bless you and help you as you endeavor to lead your ministry.

Ukraine Teen Challenge Camp 2010

By Kevin Tyler, GTC Regional Rep for Eurasia

Camps are a popular summer activity in Ukraine, and recently Sergey Glushko, Teen Challenge Ukraine Director, organized a camp for 140 rehabilitation center students. These rehab center students from a local Messianic Jewish congregation, a Baptist church, Charismatic churches, and Youth with a Mission all came together for a five-day camp.

Campers enjoyed a beautiful wooded area in west Ukraine that offered swimming and other recreational opportunities, but most importantly they participated in services and classes that left them spiritually refreshed. Students listened to teachings on addiction, anger, forgiveness, and rational Christian thinking. The approximately 30 staff members in attendance also had a special day of teaching on Servant Leadership.

Sergey had only been in the rehabilitation center for a week when he came to the

camp. During the teaching about forgiveness, Sergey realized that hatred toward his parents had driven him to alcoholism and attempted suicide. After praying to accept Christ and deciding to forgive his parents, Sergey testified: "I felt such freedom in my heart and my soul, I can't describe it in words, but I have experienced the freedom to forgive and I now feel free!"

Yaroslava used drugs for more than ten years. Glushko met her and her little daughter at a methadone clinic.

She agreed to go to a rehabilitation center and had only been there for three weeks when she attended the camp. There, for the first time she experienced true Christian fellowship. She met former alcoholics and drug addicts who were now completely free and happy and praising Jesus. She's excited about her relationship with God and wants to return to camp ... but next year as a worker!

Now in its third year of operation, the camp has doubled in size each year -the first year's attendance was 35, the second year's attendance 70, the third year 140-and organizers believe it will double again next year when it is anticipated that two camps will be needed to accommodate the growing demand.

MAPS - A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE!

One of life's great lessons comes in the area of giving and receiving.  We are constantly reminded as we serve the Lord how giving can be a blessing to the receiver but life changing to the giver.  Someone remarked that if you want to be happy for a day, go shopping.  If you want to be happy for a week, go on vacation.  If you want to be happy for a month, get married !!! If you want to be happy for a year, spend your rich uncle's inheritance.  But if you want to be happy for a lifetime, be a giver.  Scripture leads us in this area as we know it is more blessed to give. Contruction image

MAPS is a construction based ministry that takes lay people from all walks of life and gives them opportunities to serve and give of themselves through construction projects and Teen Challenge centers.  These unbelievable opportunities can take you across the country or around the world. These same opportunities give you a chance to touch a generation and touch the heart of God.  And you come away with defining moments that can be cherished for a lifetime as you walk with the Lord.

Contruction CrewOur office is here to serve you in information of locations, logistics in travel, details for planning, and communication with leaders at your destination.  There are immediate needs in Buenos Aires at our Argentina TC Farm Building Dorms and in Prague, Czech Republic at our Women's Facility. Skill needs include framers, electricians, drywall, plumbing and tile.  Laborers and helpers are always needed.     Individuals and teams are needed in completing projects at these locations. Costs usually include airfare, lodging, food, and transfers.

Global Internships - Jamaica

By Mike McGarvey

I watched intently as my friend Justin, took off his worn out low top Converse All-Stars and rolled up his jeans.

He stepped into shin deep water infested with trash, debris, and excrement to take a hot meal to a weathered man sitting in a dilapidated lawn chair in the middle of the a river. Justin and I brought 14 students from his youth ministry at Hope Community Church in Missouri to work with Teen Challenge Jamaica in JamaicaOcho Rios. As the students followed Justin, one after another into the small community under the bridge on the banks of that river, their perspective changed. The distance between their lives in Springfield, Missouri, and that bridge in Jamaica grew as far as the Sun is to Earth.

Although the air grew more humid and more putrid, the shade under the bridge was a welcome relief from the sweltering Caribbean sun. The muddy ground shifted with every step and the breeze carried the putrid scent of feces, marijuana, and hot curried chicken. Our group crawled under a bridge to share a meal and hope and life through Christ with the people that lived there. Under that bridge, thousands of miles from home, 14 students got their first taste of the ministry of Teen Challenge.

With 40+ countries asking for Teen Challenge to come and help with addiction in their communities, we're going to need help. Author and Pastor Mark Batterson has a mantra he often repeats in his writing: "A change of place + A change of pace = A change of perspective." We believe that short and long term missions offer a change of perspective that can have lifelong ramifications. It is why our mission is to send students and graduates on short and long term trips to Teen Challenge centers around the world.

It is our hope and prayer that some of these students will go on to become staff Jamaica Workmembers, directors, and open new Teen Challenge centers around the world, that they would become life-long supporters of Teen Challenge, and that they will have spent time and served with a ministry where they see God at work. They will have confidence that they can send struggling friends and family to Teen Challenge and expect God to do new miracles of transformation.
