Setting Goals, By Dr. Jerry Nance
Dr. Jerry Nance
I want to talk to you this month about setting goals for your personal life as well as for your ministry. It goes without saying that you need to seek God when you are setting goals of any kind. Seeking God is always the starting place. Jesus set a role model of rising early and going to a solitary place to pray. Luke tells us that Jesus walked up the mountain on other occasions and he often slipped away from the crowd. He sought God. When setting goals you must seek God.

"Everyone tries to get help from the leader, but only God will give us justice." Proverbs 29:26 (The Message)

An astounding number of people today lack a strong sense of purpose. Pulitzer-winning writer Katherine Anne Porter observed: "I am appalled at the aimlessness of most people's lives. Fifty percent don't pay any attention to where they are going; forty percent are undecided and will go in any direction. Only ten percent know what they want, and even all of them don't go toward it."

Goals give you something concrete to focus on, and focus has a positive impact on your actions. Goals help us focus our attention on our purpose and make it our dominant aspiration. And as philosopher-poet Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "The world makes way for the man who knows where he is going. "Use the following guidelines to keep your goals on target. Goals must be . . .

  -  Written
  -  Personal
  -  Specific
  -  Achievable
  -  Measurable
  -  Time-sensitive

These are time-tested concepts that have a proven track record for successful leading and goal setting.

Global Teen Challenge continues to work from our strategic plan that clearly defines our goals. We will re-evaluate them next month and set new goals, objectives and assignments of task. This focus keeps us from getting distracted by the chaos of our lives and society. The more focused our goals, the more we are able to accomplish for the kingdom of God.

Let me encourage you to evaluate your goals. If they are not written down, then start there. Get your staff together and take some time to look down the road to where you want to be in a year, three years and maybe even five years.

And don't stop with setting goals-review them every day and take practical steps on reaching these goals.

God bless you in your efforts of setting goals.

New Leadership courses from EQUIP
founded by John Maxwell

We have added 36 new leadership courses to the website www.iTeenChallenge.org
These courses were provided to us by EQUIP Ministries, founded by John Maxwell. They have taken his books and teachings and packaged them into these 36 leadership courses. There are 72 more courses from this same series that will be coming in the months ahead.

Each of these leadership courses are located in two places on the website.

iteenchallenge.org EQUIP

1. We have added a 9th Track to the Staff Training section, called "EQUIP - Founded by John Maxwell" The 36 courses are all part of Volume One of the training materials. Volume One is divided into 6 Books-with 6 courses in each book.

The illustration above shows the new Track 9 selected, and Topic T903 selected, and the 6 courses in that notebook are listed on the right column.

2. Each of these 36 courses have also been placed in the appropriate Topics in all the other 8 Tracks on Staff Training, for example: "God's Call for Us to Lead" is Course T102.03 in Track T1, "Organizational Leadership, Topic 102, "Characteristics of Leadership."

EQUIP has translated some of these courses into more than 30 languages. We will be uploading these courses in other languages as soon as possible. One of the ways you can help us is to let us know which of these courses you would like uploaded first in your language, and we will work to make that happen.

At the present time, each of these leadership courses has:
   -   a Notesheet for the participants
   -   an Answer Key
   -   a set of instructions for teaching the course.

The person teaching these courses will need to do some preparation. Include your own illustrations and applications to personalize each course for your Teen Challenge setting.

Our long range goal is to personalize each of these courses for teaching them in the Teen Challenge setting, and provide additional tools, including a PowerPoint presentation and more teaching resources. One course where we have already done this is: Course T301.02 "The Leader's Time:  Tick Tock, Manage the Clock" in Track T3, "Personal/Spiritual Growth," Topic T301, "Time Management."

At the present time, most of these courses have not been personalized for use in Teen Challenge, so if you do that and create a PowerPoint or any other teaching notes, would you please send us a copy of them to share with others:  [email protected]

EQUIP has placed a requirement on our use of these training materials- the Scriptures that are used in these courses cannot be removed. You may however, add more Scriptures if you so desire.

We have also been asked to provide EQUIP with personal testimonies of those who have benefited from this teaching, so please send your comments, testimonies, questions to: [email protected]
Caribbean Teacher Training - Fast Track

Gregg & Linda Fischer
Gregg & Linda Fischer
Jamaica Teen Challenge hosted a Personal Studies for New Christians Teacher Training seminar for staff from Caribbean TC ministries in June. Global TC Curriculum Director Gregg Fischer and his wife Linda presented the training. Staff from Jamaica Teen Challenge as well as Trinidad & Tobago Teen Challenge attended.

Personal Studies certification can be a long process. This seminar was designed to be a Fast Track to certification. All of the CD/DVD material from the certification training was taught live with many sessions actually taking place in the PSNC classroom with students present. Teachers had opportunity to answer flags and work with students at stop points. Teachers and students also had sessions together on how to set personal application goals and on easy ways to memorize scripture.
Training session
Barbara Richards, wife of Jamaica TC director Anthony Richards will be the "Authorized Global Teen Challenge Curriculum representative" for the Caribbean region. This means that PSNC teacher certification for English speaking Caribbean TC centers will be handled through Teen Challenge Jamaica. Global Teen Challenge would like to set up similar representatives to facilitate PSNC teacher certification in other countries and or regions in the near future.

By the end of the training 2 teachers were re-certified, 1 new teacher was fully certified, 2 more teachers were within a few hours of being fully certified and  4 more were well on their way to getting their full PSNC teacher certification.

The With Love Movement Story
by Mike McGarvey

Our story really begins a few years back when as college students we asked ourselves, "What would happen if we designed clothing that changed the world?" It's as ridiculous as it sounds, but every month we got reports from Teen Challenge centers around the world of needs that if met would help them continue to change lives and see people set free from addiction. We looked at these needs and wanted to help but we just didn't have the financial resources.
 Addiction Ends with Love
So how could we help? We decided we could tell stories and in February of 2010 we started doing just that-telling these stories on clothing that would change lives.  We've been telling stories and selling clothing to youth groups, churches, colleges, events and out of the trunk of my car.

Our message is simple: "Addiction Ends With Love"- With people serving in Teen Challenge around the world, Loving God and Loving Others (Matt. 22:37-40), they are bringing freedom from addiction and freedom in Christ those who are desperate for help.

We are currently using this as a means of raising funds for Teen Challenge in Swaziland and Uzbekistan. We are also looking for more projects. We need you to help us identify new projects so we can tell new stories:

Email your needs to [email protected]

A few tips to help us tell your story and raise support for you:
   -   Keep it short, 500 words or less
   -   Keep it personal, how will meeting this need help an individual find freedom?
   -   Keep the project cost under $5,000
   -   Send pictures if available
   -   Tell others about www.withlovemovement.comAddiction Ends with Love T-Shirts

Looking for fund-raising ideas?

Contact us at www.withlovemovement.com or [email protected]  for special deals on bulk pricing for our top-selling shirt, the "Addiction Ends With Love" shirt. Our special pricing is so low you'll make a huge profit and help us spread the word!

Global Internships

The summer always is a busy time with Global Internships; we have several college students and Teen Challenge graduates serving at Teen Challenge centers in Romania, South Africa, and Swaziland. The biggest blessing I keep hearing from our interns overseas is the time the directors and staff have taken to invest in them. Those staff and directors are investing in the next generation of Teen Challenge directors, staff, and supporters.  Check out next month's Leadership Link for awesome testimonies of the student internships around the world.

In August the Global Internships team is kicking off a busy fall and winter of taking groups on short term trips to Teen Challenge centers around the world. It is during these short term trips that many people will receive those life-long calls to the ministry of Teen Challenge, whether as staff or supporters. We will have teams in Jamaica and the Czech Republic in August. Exciting, life-changing times lay ahead!
