Greetings!
We hope you are seeing God at work in your place of
ministry. We are encouraged to hear reports from all over the world, including
interest in starting Teen Challenge in new countries-Georgia, Israel, Nepal,
Philippines, and more. In this issue, Jerry Nance talks about leading at a higher
level. We also have an update on the publishing of the Cross and the
Switchblade book. You will also read of ministry reports from Mexico and an
opportunity to help Teen Challenge in Romania. New courses are being added to the website: iTeenchallenge.org including leadership courses by Equip

The right kind of
leadership, By Dr. Jerry Nance
This month I want to continue talking about "Leading at a Higher
Level." Over the past months I have talked about setting our sights on the
right target and vision, serving our customers (our students, their families,
and our donors), and treating our people right. This month I want to wrap up this discussion with a brief
discussion on having the right kind of
leadership. Organizations where leading at a higher level exists are organizations
that: 1. Set their sight on the
right target and vision. 2. Serve your customer.
(In Teen Challenge the students, families and donors are the "customers.") 3. Treat our people
right (the staff). 4. Have the right kind of
leadership. The four priorities above define what Ken Blanchard and Paul
Hersey call "Situational Leadership," in their book, Leading at a Higher Level.
In this book, the authors develop a second version of this
concept which defines a powerful tool you can use in leading people
effectively. How people respond to directions and/or what is the emotional
makeup of a person gives us some clues on how to best lead them. The
Situational Leadership II Model suggests that there are 4 basic leadership
styles. These define "the right kind of leadership." 1. Directing 2. Coaching 3. Supporting 4. Delegating These correspond with the 4 basic development levels of your
staff. Blanchard and Hersey suggest the following: 1. Enthusiastic beginner - low competence, high
commitment 2. Disillusioned learner - low to some competence,
low commitment 3. Capable but cautious performer - moderate to
high competence, variable commitment. 4. Self-reliant achiever - high competence, high
commitment. If you are going to have the right kind of leadership, you must
know what each individual staff needs, and provide the appropriate leadership. As a leader you sometimes lead by giving high direction and low
support (Directing). Other times you provide both high direction and high
support (Coaching). Then as an employee/staff begins to mature in your
organization, you lead with less
direction and higher support (Supporting).
Then finally you have staff who are self starters and can take on projects and
work on their own. You lead with low direction and low support (Delegating). In Ken Blanchard's book, Leading at a Higher Level, you can
see these principles described in greater detail. May God continue to help us as we endeavor to lead at a higher
level.

Great things happening in Mexico!, By Duane Henders, GTC
Regional Representative for Latin America & the Caribbean
Duane Henders | Duane Henders, Norbert Schenhals, Gregg
Fischer and Rick Souza participated in a week of staff training May 23-29, 2010
at Mexico City Teen Challenge. About 25
TC Mexico staff attended from the four resident centers and representatives
from two other rehab ministries also attended.
Gregg presented TC Curriculum training
for two days and the Mexico TC staff showed great interest in pursuing TC
Curriculum implementation and Teacher Certification. Norbert preached several powerful messages to
the students in the program and at the close of the services people were saved,
blessed and delivered by God's power.Chapel Service at TC |
Rick Souza led the Mexico TC staff
through the process of Strategic Planning and they established the following as
their top priorities: 1. Staff Training,
2. Evangelism, 3. Fundraising, and 4. National TC Promotion. They have formed task forces and action plans
to make these priorities become part of their ongoing program. TC students & graduates singing |
TC Mexico is finishing a huge renovation
of their buildings at the Mexico City location and is now planning to add a TC

Cross & Switchblade publishing rights move to Global TC
Cross & Switchblade - Sinhala language |
Global Teen Challenge is now the owner of the publishing
rights to The Cross and the Switchblade book. John and Elizabeth Sherrill who
wrote the book almost 50 years ago had been the owners of these rights. Their desire
is to see this book continue to be used as a tool for bringing people to
Christ. The Sherrills, both in their 80s, are excited to see how this book
continues to be used in Teen Challenge ministries around the world. Now that Global Teen Challenge is the owner of the
publishing rights to this book, we will be able to arrange for its translation
and publication in other countries around the world. Most recently it was
translated into the Sinhala language and published in Sri Lanka. Currently it
is being translated into Afrikaans and will be published in South Africa. We
are also working to get it translated into several other languages. As preparations were being made for the Teen Challenge 50th
anniversary several years ago, we obtained a copy of the condensed version of
this book which had been published in the Good
Housekeeping magazine in 1963. This condensed version is about 50 pages
long, compared to the full length version which is about 200 pages long. This
condensed version is being used in several countries as an evangelism and
outreach tool. Please note that Global Teen Challenge also inherited all
the current contracts with publishers around the world. If you are interested
in publishing (or translating) this book in your country, please contact the
Global Teen Challenge office first and determine if a contract is already in
place. There must be a contract that is current in order to print this book.
We look forward to see how God will continue to use this amazing story to change even more lives all over the world.

With Love
Movement - New Project! by Mike McGarvey
This
week we unveil our new project at www.withlovemovement.com The capital city of Romania, Bucharest,
sits near the Bulgarian border between the Carpathian Mountains, one of the
world's few remaining wildernesses and the eastern shores of the Black Sea.
Bucharest is the seat of the governing body of Romania; it was here, under the
rule of Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu that Romanian families were
required by law to have many children in order to bolster the population.
However Ceausescu's policy forced
families into poverty and filled the state-run orphanages with children
abandoned by their parents. With families already struggling with the burden of
taking care of themselves, many of these children were not adopted. At age 18
they were simply let out onto the streets. Without support and structure the
young men quickly turned to crime and the women to prostitution, and addiction
came with it all.
Located 15 miles outside of Bucharest,
Teen Challenge is reaching out to the street children and helping them break
the bondage of addiction.
Recently, we heard that one of the Teen
Challenge buildings used for housing those recovering from drug addiction needs
a new heating unit to keep everyone warm through the long Romanian winters. The
total cost of the project is $2,550 USD.
Make a donation and get one of our
brand new shirts. Help us give more so they can reach more. www.withlovemovement.com
