4 Key Principles for Leading your Ministry at a Higher Level
by Dr. Jerry Nance
Dr. Jerry Nance

Over the next 4 months I would like to share some key principles that are present in most highly functioning and performing organizations. These principles come from Dr. Ken Blanchard's book entitled, "Leading at a Higher Level."

Organizations where leading at a higher level exists are organizations that:

1.     Set their sight on the right target and vision.
2.     Treat their customers right. (In TC the student, family and donor is the "customer.")
3.     Treat their staff and volunteers right.
4.     Have the right kind of leadership.

Let's look at number one this month. How does one go about setting their sight on the right target and have the right vision?

Marksmen will tell you that if you are going to aim for a target, you should go for the bull's-eye. The reason for that is if you miss the bull's-eye, you're still on the target. But, if all you do is aim for the target and you miss, you're nowhere. Someone else said that if you shoot at nothing, you will always hit your target.

Some leaders don't like to set goals or to project vision because those goals and vision hold them accountable to accomplish at a certain level. Then if they don't reach their goals they may receive criticism or might feel like a failure. I know personally that when I set goals, I tend to accomplish much more in a year's time. I have missed many goals over the years and when I do, I re-evaluate the reasons why I didn't reach them and set new ones for the next year.

Great Vision provides you with the picture of the future for your organization. It gives you, your staff, and donors a glimpse into where you are going and what you hope to accomplish over time. It tells a story and clarifies why you are doing what you are doing and it gives hope.

The target you aim for has a lot to do with your performance.

As a ministry we want to be an organization that everyone can send their child to with confidence their child will be cared for and helped. You know that everyone who comes to us for help may not stay long enough for us to help them. However, it is our full desire that anyone who comes will be cared for equally, with deep conviction and not leave before their life has been changed. We want to see every life transformed by God's power.

As an organization, we want to be respected as the provider of choice. We want the community to feel that we are the best at what we do and that we have the best program possible. We want our graduates to be raving fans of their experience in Teen Challenge. We also want to be the best place to work and provide our donors with the confidence that they are giving to a credible organization.

I challenge you to study the topic of casting vision, and do yourself a favor--dream big for the Lord!

Rick SouzaRick Souza has been chosen as the new director of the Global Teen Challenge Sustainable Solutions Department. For the past year Brent Collins has served in that capacity. Brent is leaving GTC with plans to become an Assemblies of God missionary to Spain.

Rick Souza's vision for the GTC Sustainable Solutions Dept.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with Teen Challenge ministries around the world in this new capacity. Every Teen Challenge center must raise funds to support their ministry. Donations are accepted, but in many centers they are not sufficient to meet the annual budget. The goal for each Teen Challenge center around the world is to be indigenous and totally self-sufficient.

A secondary goal is that job and skills training will take place at each center, which will help graduates become productive, employed citizens when they return to the market place.

One of the ways for TC centers to meet these two goals is to establish micro-enterprise businesses--small businesses with three purposes:
1.      Financial sustainability for the TC center
2.      Job/skills training for the TC students
3.      Provide a template to start other micro-enterprises in the surrounding community

I see one of the main priorities of GTC is to provide local TCs with practical training, mentorship, educational materials, and assistance in strategic planning in the area of micro-enterprise development. We believe there are many Christian business leaders in the USA and other countries that would be very interested in coming along side TC centers around the world to assist them in the area of micro-enterprise development. Micro-enterprise endeavors in TCs have been very successful where they have had the right leadership.

For the past number of years I have helped Teen Challenge centers and other ministries by taking them through a strategic planning process. This has been a powerful tool to help them focus their efforts on more effective ways to do their ministry. I will continue to assist centers interested in strategic planning as a part of my work with the Sustainable Solutions Department of GTC.

One of my immediate goals is to identify TC centers around that world that have effective micro-enterprise businesses currently in place. If that describes your center, please email me and we can talk more.

There are many TCs around the world looking for help in establishing micro-enterprises or increasing the effectiveness of the ones they have. We are developing a tool which can be used to help TCs assess their needs and potential for a business and determine the personnel to be involved in the project. We will also assist TCs in developing a business plan which is essential in setting basic goals for each micro-enterprise business.

I look forward to working with you and welcome your emails.  You can reach me at RLSouza@softcom.net

Global Internship Opportunities

Nestled among the mountains in the southern tip of the African continent is the small Kingdom of Swaziland. The country, no more than 200 kilometers across holds a population of almost 1.2 million people.

It is said that if something is not done, the people of Swaziland could be extinct within the next 16 years from the AIDS epidemic sweeping through their cities, towns, and villages. Though the outlook for the Kingdom of Swaziland is bleak, there is a group of people fighting to preserve a remnant of the people of Swaziland.

Swaziland Teen Challenge runs several different centers aimed at helping people with life controlling problems and illnesses. One of those centers is Hawane Farms, a center for HIV/AIDS affected and infected children. Most of the children sent to them are what they call "double orphans," meaning the adult members of their family--parents and grandparents, have died from AIDS. In the orphanage the children go to school, learn about their Swazi culture and lifestyle, and receive the medical care they need to fight HIV/AIDS.

In October 2009 two of the boys that live at the center got a chest infection and were hospitalized for 8 days. Thankfully, both boys are recovering, however, they are left with no way to pay their outstanding medical bills. Here's where we can help.

This month Global Internships launched the "With Love Movement," a Teen Challenge endeavor to raise awareness of the worldwide drug epidemic as well as to help meet the needs of Teen Challenge centers around the world in a tangible way. For every donation of $20 or more to a specific project, we will send a specially designed, limited edition T-Shirt highlighting the need that you are helping to meet. You can make your donations, read the other stories, and get involved at www.withlovemovement.com If you have any questions please contact us at gi@teenchallengeusa.com
