A Message from our new President
| |
Dear Friends,
Green Schools has completed another successful year of growth and outstanding accomplishments. More schools, more students, more programs, and more support, 2011-2012 has truly been a banner year. It is an honor to introduce myself to you all, many for the first time, as the new President of Green Schools.
There are now more than 130 Massachusetts schools and countless more across the country making the Green Difference. These schools dedicate themselves independently and with our support in implementing programs and completing projects in the interest of environmental stewardship.
It is my pleasure to congratulate Ms. Nicole Cormier as our new Green Schools Student Ambassador Advisor. With 80 Student Ambassadors across Massachusetts, Green Schools has a more student engagement than ever before. These students are engaging and leading their schools through projects and educational programming. This is our next generation of true leaders.
Programming continues to be the core strength of Green Schools. Our programs and materials have been updated and are being distributed internationally. These resource provide programming guidelines and best practices for schools looking to make the Green Difference.
Support is at an all-time high, with increased membership, grants, personal and private contributions, and volunteer hours. It is through the support of every dedicated friend of Green Schools that we are able to continuously improve the education environments of our children.
I am excited for our year to come. Green Schools is focusing on increasing our impact by offering a new Provisional Membership to all schools, which provides access to all of our program materials. Programs are being developed in partnership with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and United States agencies. And, the Green Schools Society will launch as an environmental honor society to recognize exemplary students in grades 6 through 12 for their accomplishments in environmental service.
Please count on me, just as I count on you all, to dedicate myself to supporting Green Schools through every able means. I look forward to hearing of the great work and success of you all this year. Because, truly, we share in our successes together.
Sincerely,
Sean R. Sullivan

"I am a member of my class council and communicate with administration ways to better our environment and be aware of the constant improvements. I am currently focused on school lunches and ways to efficiently serve healthful food while offering a recycling system to students. Personally, I value healthy diets, daily exercise, and strive to be an educated consumerI value healthy diets, daily exercise, and strive to be an educated consumer."
Andrea
Senior at Foxborough Regional Charter School
"Green Schools is a wonderful organization that caught my attention this time last year. Our recycling wasn't going as well as we would have hope. There wasn't enough awareness and we didn't have the proper supplies to make it happen and it killed us to see all of the paper, plastic, etc. going to waste. I invited Robin to my school, showed her around, and introduced her to all the dedicated students that were excited to try and make our school a better place. Our school has just finished its massive 24 million dollar expansion and I am happy to say we have started off more green with our new recycling bins and eco friendly/motion censored lights and this is only the first step to making my school a more eco friendly learning environment. I am eager to see how much more we can accomplish this year."

| SolSolution |
SolSolution's mission is to simultaneously generate clean, renewable electricity and increase the quality of education in underprivileged schools. We install solar panels at schools at no upfront cost to decrease electricity expenses and thereby increase educational budgets. Furthermore, SolSolution reinvests its profits from the sale of the solar-generated electricity into educational programming in STEM, solar, and green entrepreneurship for all of its partner schools and provides cash grants exclusively for low-income schools.
Last December, SolSolution completed its pilot school installation on Aruna's Place Preschool in Sudbury, MA, and to date, the 3.9 kW solar photovoltaic installation has generated over 2,200 kWh of electricity saving the school hundreds of dollars. Now, the SolSolution team is working with over 30 schools and school districts across the state to provide even more clean energy for education.

| The Park School says, "Less Phone Books!" | Fourth graders from The Park School say, "Less phone books!" Instead of getting so many phone books you should be able to opt-out. Most people don't use phone books, but they still get two of them a year. We want to petition the Massachusetts government to make it so that you can get out of getting phone books if you don't want them. By opting-out, soon you will realize that things will significantly change in the amount of phone books you are receiving.
