Mansfield High School's Green Earth Hornets Along with Together We Can Built Us a Greenhouse!

Mansfield HS Greenhouse

In partnership with Mansfield High School's Green Earth Hornets and Together We Can, we did it! Our greenhouse is built at Mansfield High School and we can not wait to get growing!

The Green Earth Hornets have big plans for integrating this greenhouse into curriculum, hands on learning, and

even a bit of fundraising.

It was a lot of hard work, but we all had fun and look forward to the possibilities. Thanks again Green Earth Hornets and Together We Can!

Environmental Working Group Just Released the Latest Update to its Farm Subsidy Database and it's Ruffling Some Feathers

Environmental Working Group

Why? Once again they exposed the fact that our government is doling out subsidies to big farms that don't need the help and a lot of folks who don't live anywhere near a farm. (Don't believe it? Try entering 90210 into their database and you'll meet the "Farmers of Beverly Hills".)

Saying this is a waste is putting things mildly.

The farm bill, really it's a food bill, that Congress writes and passes every five years is a critical piece of legislation that determines whether we can put affordable, healthy organic food on our table. But as the millions of dollars in government payments to city slickers shows, the system is broken.

Just think: All this money could be used to encourage more organic farming, protect the land and the environment, and feed low-income families and children who depend on government nutrition programs with healthy, unprocessed food.

If you've ever wondered why organic food can be hard to find and usually pretty expensive -- check out some of the resources they pulled together to help you better understand the farm bill, the subsidies and the impact they have on your life and food choices.

Click here to see their farm bill resources page.

National Hispanic Environmental Council

National Hispanic Environmental Council Sponsored Training in New Mexico l Open to all youth ages 16-19 l $25 registration fee, all other expenses paid l Full details below

The National Hispanic Environmental Council (NHEC) is still accepting applications from students to participate in the 10th annual "Minority Youth Environmental Training Institute" August 12 - 21, 2011 in beautiful Glorieta, New Mexico.

The national Institute in NM is an intensive, residential, science-based, environmental education AND environmental career training program for top students, aged 16-19, deeply interested/active in the environment. Students are selected competitively from all across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Note that students in both high school and college are eligible to apply.

Through a full scholarship NHEC will COVER ALL COSTS for accepted students, including round-trip airfare, housing, meals, books, science equipment, and more for the 10 day long Institute.

Students are housed at the Glorieta Conference Center and closely supervised by NHEC staff. The Institute is designed to build the next generation of environmental leaders and professionals. Students learn about key natural resource and environmental topics, as well as the wide range of careers in the natural resource and environmental arena, plus how to land jobs/internships with our federal agency sponsors.

In addition to our Instructors, NHEC uses an overlay of volunteer "role models" -- working minority professionals from every environmental field -- who participate each year. Several such role models are present daily (on average 25-30 in total) who help teach the curriculum, inspire the students, and share their environmental expertise, technical knowledge, and cultural heritage. Please contact NHEC if you are interested in serving as a role model.

All materials necessary for students to apply is on the website. Please read the "Fact Sheet" first, as it has key information about the program. Interested students should apply as soon as possible as the Institute is fast approaching. Regarding deadlines, NHEC is still accepting applications and we will continue to do so up to the limit of our available funding.

Feel free to contact NHEC, especially our Programs Coordinator, Juan Rodriguez, at [email protected] or Roger Rivera, at [email protected] if you have any questions. Thank you.
