MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

Loyd Auerbach

Investigating the Paranormal
A Parapsychological Perspective
with
Loyd Auerbach
Background

Human beings are drawn to a good ghost story.  Human beings also are continually reporting situations in which they believe ghosts are playing a part.  What are the methods for investigating and some of the possible explanations for these experiences that people have been having for thousands of years?

In this presentation, Professor Loyd Auerbach will examine methods and motives of field investigators who look into reported incidents of ostensible apparitions, hauntings, and poltergeists.  It will be a guide to ghost hunting, and attendees will gain the basic skills and understanding for investigation of ghosts, poltergeists, haunted places and related psychic experiences.

The class will include the models of what these things are (from the field of parapsychology), how the scientific and psychic approaches can mesh together, and how to assess a situation, investigate it, and resolve the case to the satisfaction of the people having the experiences (and hopefully to the satisfaction of the ghosts, when they're involved).

Finally, using some of his cases, he will discuss the role of the parapsychological investigator as "solver" of the cases (as opposed to "gatherer" of data) - the ghost buster.

Some of the questions that will be addressed are:

Who were the early ghosthunters, and how did they go about their investigations?
What has been learned about apparitions, hauntings and poltergeists since the start of the field?
How do scientific investigations differ from ones focusing on "busting" ghosts?
How does what parapsychological investigators do differ from what's portrayed on TV?
How do psychics and mediums fit in to case investigations?
How do normal events sometimes get labeled as paranormal ones?

Outline of the Seminar

  • What do we "investigate" and Why? Basic Concepts
    • Apparitions (ghosts), Hauntings and Poltergeists
    • Approaches
    • Scientific Conceptual Framework
    • Psychic Conceptual Framework
  • History: 130 years of Field Research and Investigation and how modern pop culture (thanks to TV) has altered the public's view of what paranormal investigation is all about.
  • Skills and more needed for investigations:
    • Interviewing Skills
    • Background Research Skills
    • Observation Skills: Perception, Magic & Fraud
    • Intuitive/Psychic Skills. Techniques for psychic self protection will be given.
    • Environmental Sensors: Equipment/Technology
    • Technology:
    • What's the purpose of tech?
    • What kind of technology can be used, and where do you get it?
    • How does one interpret the data?
    • What tech has been useful?
    • Correlations between the environment and phenomena
    • Non-tech "tech": Ouija Boards and other "occult" trappings
    • Orbs! And other photographic issues
    • Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) /Instrumental Transcommunication (ITC)
  • Psychics, Mediums and Sensitives: The Human Detectors
  • Perspective: The Problems with Tech (or, Tech vs. Human Experience)
  • Science and Paranormal Investigation
    • How Science does/does not relate to Technology (and its use)
    • How Science is applied outside the Laboratory
    • What makes an investigation "scientific"?
    • When should it not matter whether the investigation is/is not scientific?
  • Psi and Paranormal Investigation: where the phenomena and investigations fit into the broader spectrum of psychic experiences and abilities, and why one cannot separate ESP and PsychoKinesis from the phenomena being investigated.
  • Resolution Techniques: A short primer on techniques that have worked to "bust ghosts."
  • What I've learned from my own field work.
About Loyd Auerbach

Loyd Auerbach is well-known to the public and his colleagues as a leading expert on Ghosts and Psychic Experience. With a Master's degree in Parapsychology, he is Director of the Office of Paranormal Investigations, a Professor at Atlantic University (Virginia Beach, VA) and at JFK University (Pleasant Hill, CA), and creator and Instructor of the Certificate Program in Parapsychological Studies at HCH Institute, available both in California and for distance learning. He is the co-author, with the late psychic Annette Martin, of the new book The Ghost Detectives' Guide to Haunted San Francisco (Craven Street Books, 2011).

After being appointed to the faculty of Atlantic University

www.atlanticuniv.edu) in late 2010 to help develop and teach online Parapsychology courses -- he began teaching one online course, Principles of Parapsychology, for the university early in 2011 and is developing several others for a proposed Master's Degree in Interdisciplinary Conscious Studies.

He was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Rhine Research Center, and was previously a member of the Advisory Boards. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Windbridge Institute, and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Forever Family Foundation. He was a Consulting Editor and columnist for FATE magazine from 1991-2004 and is quite active in the parapsychological community.

Auerbach is the author of seven other books on the Paranormal, including A Paranormal Casebook: Ghost Hunting in the New Millennium (Atriad Press, 2005), Hauntings & Poltergeists: A Ghost Hunter's Guide (Ronin Publishing, 2004) and Ghost Hunting: How to Investigate the Paranormal (Ronin, 2004).

In addition, he has contributed a lengthy essay, "Parapsychology for Ghost Hunters," to the 2011 book Exposed, Uncovered & Declassified: Ghosts, Spirits, & Hauntings: Am I Being Haunted? edited by Michael Pye and Kirsten Dalley (New Page Books, 2011).

He is a professional mentalist and psychic entertainer, performing as Professor Paranormal - a title that follows him into his more serious work. He is a past President of the Psychic Entertainers Association, and is currently on the Board of Directors.

His knowledge and experience of magic and mentalism, coupled with his background in Parapsychology and broad knowledge of other sciences has led to a number of researchers to consult with him, especially with regard to laboratory controls and where potential for psychic fraud has existed.

He has appeared in thousands of radio, podcast, and print interviews, and hundreds of national and local TV shows including The View, Ghost Adventures, Larry King Live, Oprah, Criss Angel: Mindfreak, Sightings, In Search Of, the Today Show, Unsolved Mysteries, Late Night with David Letterman. He can be seen frequently on A&E, BIO, the History Channel, the Travel Channel, Syfy, the Discovery Channel, and TLC (as many of his cable appearances are in eternal reruns).

You can read a number of his past articles for free, and find additional information about Parapsychology, the Office of Paranormal Investigations, and Professor Paranormal on his website at www.mindreader.com

But he's more than a mere parapsychologist and psychic entertainer. In 2009, he completed a professional chocolatier course, and early 2012 will (finally) see the launch of his book on chocolate, entitled Haunted By Chocolate: How to Go from Chocoholic to Chocolate Gourmet. In the meantime, you can purchase some of his ghost drops - and in mid to late winter 2012, his Cocoa Oracle chocolate fortune pieces -- at  www.hauntedbychocolate.com

Loyd Auerbach holds a BA in Cultural Anthropology (though he started out in Astrophysics!) from Northwestern University (1978), and an MS in Parapsychology from John F. Kennedy University (1981).
