Chair's Article
by Tom Whaley, St. Paul Saints
You can't turn on the news without hearing about
Healthcare Reform. We all know the
significance for access to quality healthcare for our families, but do we
understand what the proposed reforms will be mean to our businesses and the
economy? There seems to be more
questions then straightforward answers and so I am looking forward to the timely
breakfast presentation on November 18th by former US Senator Dave
Durenberger. Recognized nationally for
his expertise on healthcare he is also currently the Chair of the National
Institute on Health Policy with St Thomas University. Help us spread the word; both to those you
think might be interested within your company or to your customers and
vendors. Which brings me to the
MEMBERSHIP DRIVE!
The Midway Chamber is truly the most cost effective
investment a company with any business interest in this area can make! Our website and social media connections are
cutting edge, our top notch events are well attended and we are significant
participants in the largest public investment that may ever occur at one time in
St Paul and so far in all of MN. All for
an introductory dues investment of $160!!!!
We know each and every expense is being analyzed, we want to give every
company that is interested the opportunity to join our great group, now!
Construction for Central Corridor may begin as early as
next year. Our Economic Development
Committee has been a conduit for information to and from the Met Council and
will continue to do so in earnest as contract and construction decisions
near. We have several chamber members
who serve as business leaders on the Met Council's Business Advisory Council and
our President Lori Fritts serves as the council's co-chair. Lori also represents our business community
through several other groups that are collaborations of government, nonprofit
and business interests working behind the scenes to develop and implement
business mitigation plans.
Finally, as those of you who attend our events know, we
can turn out people! Regardless of the
larger plans that will be executed over time, we know that with a strong Midway
Chamber of Commerce we will be able to sustain a productive effort throughout
construction to bring commerce to impacted businesses. The next few years may in fact be the
chamber's most relevant contribution to the local business community as your
organization moves beyond the 90-year mark of existence.

American Engineering Testing, Inc. (AET), On a hilltop overlooking Narragansett Bay in Newport, Rhode Island, stands a
mysterious two-story stone structure called the Newport Tower. Long thought to
be a Colonial-age windmill, new ground-breaking research by American
Petrographic Services, Inc. (APS) has uncovered evidence that clearly indicates
a much older origin for the structure. APS's research into the tower's
engineering and design, which incorporated mathematics, geometry, and astronomy,
led to startling new discoveries.

Employment Action Center wants to Help re-Kindle your Business
Do
you want risk-free, profitable employees? Employment Action Center
(EAC) would like to be your non-profit partner that connecting you with
qualified, screened employees that actually saves you time and money.
We
will help your business or organization to meet your staffing needs and
save thousands of dollars. In return, we fulfill our mission of
helping people to reach their full potential by becoming gainfully
employed.
As members of the Midway Chamber, we are
reaching out to bridge the gap. There are many federal, state and
county programs and incentives designed to assist businesses and
communities alike.
By participating in one or more of
these government supported programs, you can earn anywhere from
$2,000-11,000 dollars. Consider the following scenarios:
·
Participate in the EAC Performance Plus Transitional Work Experience
program and you will receive assisted staff with wages and worker's
compensation paid for a period of 12-18 weeks (a savings to you of
approximately $2,500). These employees are of absolutely no risk to
you and can be terminated at any time.
· Transition
these employees into permanent employment and you could qualify for a
tax credit through the federally supported Work Opportunity Tax Credit
(WOTC) and reap additional $2,000 to 9,000). More information about
the WOTC is available from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment
& Training Administration:
http://www.doleta.gov/business/incentives/opptax/
· Bond employees that you feel may pose a risk.
There
are many options like those listed; we invite you to call EAC's
Marketing Manager Liberty Mikelson at (612) 752-8823 to discuss your
staffing needs.
Employment Action Center, a division of
Resource, Inc. has been partnering with local and national business for
over 30 years. Our employment and training programs service thousands
of unemployed and dislocated workers per year. People receiving
services live in your community; they are the veterans returning from
combat, refugees from war-torn countries, single moms and two-parent
families. Levels of education and experience may vary. Some people
are receiving services while completing their associates or bachelor's
degrees. Others more entry level, have tremendous pride and are willing
to do whatever work needs to be done.
