Chair's Article
by Tom Whaley, St. Paul Saints
Thank
you for electing me to chair the board of this remarkable
organization!
We have
a strong membership base today, largely through the leadership of my
predecessor, Bob Hughes. Thank you
Bob!! During my involvement in the
Midway Chamber, I have come to have great respect for the people who volunteer
their time on the Chamber's behalf and for the tremendous work that this group
accomplishes. I am very excited to work
with this year's excellent Board members to build on the good work that the
Chamber has done for the past 91 years to promote the Midway area business
community.
We have
exciting new opportunities for you that will be generated through our new
website that will be unveiled at our September 16th General Meeting
Luncheon. Sign up to join us today, we
are very pleased to have Mayor Coleman help us kickoff our new season of events
and our membership drive. Also, start
recruiting your team for the infamous Midway Chamber Softball Tournament on September 24! I guarantee you, there is nothing more
enjoyable then to be on the field at Midway Stadium with refreshments and
the fun people who participate in our chamber playing softball!
The
significance of this chamber's continued existence, when mergers and
consolidation of similar organizations have been common, has never been more
apparent then with our participation in the processes related to Central
Corridor. I can assure you that our
chamber has had a significant impact in regard to the planning and advancement
of the Central Corridor project. Every
business is important to us, member or not.
We know the sacrifices that entrepreneurs make 24 hours a day, every day,
are significant to the vitality of the Midway area. Our participation in the planning for
Business Mitigation for the Central Corridor will be in large part to create a
synergy of support for those small businesses.
Our great group will need to stay very engaged and ready to step up these
next few years. I look forward to seeing
you at our events and interacting with you through our new webpage!!!

Congratulations to our Midway Chamber of Commerce 2009 Business
of the Year Hubbard Broadcasting Inc.
At our June Annual Meeting, Hubbard Broadcasting Inc. was recognized as a Midway organization that has demonstrated business success;
innovation; commitment and leadership to the Midway business
community, as our 2009 Business of the Year.
It is because of the dedication and
support of companies like Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc, who has been our member for
60 years, that the Midway Chamber has been a vital organization for over 90 years! We were so honored to have Stanley S. Hubbard as our keynote speaker. He amazed our audience with stories about the history of Hubbard Broadcasting. He described the incredible journey that his father, he and the Hubbard family and their employees ventured through the advent of television and cable as we know it today.
For more than 80
years, Hubbard Broadcasting has stayed on the industry's cutting edge,
pioneering innovations in radio, television and satellite broadcasting. Accomplishments within their industry include
overseeing the building of the first successful UHF television station in a VHF
market; creating the world's first satellite newsgathering organization; and
establishing U. S. Satellite Broadcasting (USSB). U. S. Satellite Broadcasting was the original
licensee for high-powered Direct Broadcast Satellite service in the United
States; and USSB, together with DIRECTV®, established the DSS® (Digital
Satellite System), the first high-powered digital broadcast system in the
world.
In addition to the
innovative leadership in their industry, Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc.,is a
Minnesota corporation that employs approximately 1,100 people. HBI is still entirely a family owned company
and we are so fortunate that their corporate headquarters is still located here
in the Midway!
Additionally, HBI
owns 13 television and four radio stations serving Minnesota, New Mexico, and
New York and a production company in Florida.
Thank you to
Hubbard Broadcasting Inc., for your investment and dedication to the MN and the
Midway area!!
