Survey: Dental benefits lead to good oral health

By Jenny Ivy November 22, 2011

toothbrushThose with dental benefits, or access to affordable dental care, are 28 percent more likely to rate their oral health as excellent or very good, according to an NADP Consumer Survey.

Results of the survey, which polled more than 6,000 consumers, were released last Monday.

The survey also showed those without dental benefits - dental insurance or discount dental plans - were 2.5 times less likely to visit the dentist than those with dental benefits. Even among people with periodontal disease, which has been linked to numerous health complications including heart disease, 48 percent of those without dental benefits had not received treatment.

"Our survey found that people with dental benefits were more likely to have a regular dentist, visit the dentist more frequently, and receive dental treatment than those without. This included children's dental visits - when parents don't have dental benefits, the number of kids seeing a dentist twice a year drops by over 20%," said Evelyn F. Ireland, NADP Executive Director, in a statement.

Heart Disease:  Why Should You Care?

 candy cane

Some Holiday traditions have health consequences. Huge meals and unhealthy foods, heavy drinking and stress can increase the risk of heart problems and stroke over the holidays.

If you're like many people, you may think of heart disease as a problem that happens to other folks. "I feel fine," you may think, "so I have nothing to worry about." If you're a woman, you may also believe that being female protects you from heart disease. If you're a man, you may think you're not old enough to have a serious heart condition.

HSA Tips

 helpful tips - cropped

The Health SavingsAccount, or HSA, is an approach to health care savings signed into law in December of 2003. This individual, tax-exempt trust is unlike a flexible spending account in that you do not have to use your HSA funds every year to avoid losing them. HSA balances roll over from year to year, and your funds will continue to grow tax deferred. The HSA account can be used to save a great deal of money when used in the right way.
