Families Invited to Explore the Garden More Often

Our popular USUBC Family Night events are changing a little this year: there will be many more of them to enjoy and participants need to preregister. For the past several years we have hosted a family night during our Spring Celebration and the Pumpkinpalooza in October. This growing season will bring monthly Explore the Garden Family Nights (except in May when we'll host our first Baby Animal Days celebration) with themes ranging from art in the arboretum to a chocolate-lovers delight.

Every family night will include opportunities to learn, try a new skill, make something to take home and enjoy a tasty treat. In order to plan for enough supplies and staff helpers we ask that participants preregister online before the event. The cost is $10 per family to cover the costs of materials (See the website for all fee options). April and October family nights will still be free to attend.

On Monday, March 26, from 6:30-8 p.m., join Extension agent Mike Pace to learn about how trees are grafted and try the techniques yourself. Register here  http://register.asapconnected.com/CourseDetail.aspx?CourseID=24709

Get Ready to Grow...but When?
Although it has been a mild winter, it pays to remember that spring weather and temperatures can be very fickle in Utah. Some cold hardy vegetables like peas, spinach and onions can be planted before the last frost. But even the most prepared and anxious gardeners have to wait to plant out tomatoes, corn, squash and their heat-loving garden companions (although you can come learn how to extend your growing season in our first class of the month. See the events calendar below). Though exact dates vary from year to year, decades of temperature records give us a good idea of when to start planting in your area. Get a few pointers and average freeze dates for your part of the state http://extension.usu.edu/htm/faq/faq_q=153
