Letter from the President, Jeffrey Morrison
Jeffrey_Morrison.jpg

As President of the Seattle Counselors Association I have the opportunity to share with you some thoughts and reflections on topics that are of interest to me and, I hope, to you. What I have to offer is what each of us has to offer, our unique self, voice and gifts. I am interested in more clearly learning what those are and expressing them in a way I hope encourages you to pause, reflect and be curious about yourself and the work you do with others. Stepping into the role of President feels a bit vulnerable. Something in me worries I won't get it right.

This worried something is an aspect or part of who I am. It often feels like a shy little boy who loves to daydream. I remember being that child. It was not until I developed a Focusing practice (a body centered self awareness skill) that I realized how something in me is like that now and continues to "speak up" when I try something new. Focusing is my way of learning how to be present to my own experience at any moment. It helps me turn toward and listen deeply to something in me that may be uncomfortable but needs my attention. Once listened to with acceptance the stuck energy releases and I move forward.

I have learned that healing is about turning toward our worries, stuck places and wounds. Here we find our voice, discover our gifts and can share our aliveness. One of my gifts comes from one of my wounds. It is the way this part of me I call "shy" had to struggle with not being able to read very well in school. Today they call it dyslexia. I could tell you many stories about how I struggled in school and how it affected my sense of self but what is important is how I have turned toward this part of me and turned it into an ally, a gift.

The gift of shyness and my learning challenges lie in accepting as valid my experience of the world. My shy way of knowing allows me to be curious and imaginative. My learning issues point to a more abstract and creative way of reading and thinking. By college I found a fit between my learning differences and what I wanted to study (philosophy, religion, psychology and art). I chose a profession that values slowing down and sensing inwardly for the words that fit just how I experience something and I share how to do that with my clients. I have found my way and it is the best tool I have found for helping others find their way.

In my role of SCA President, I want to create a common space where we all have the opportunity to pause and reflect on who we are and how that informs our work. Being a good leader or therapist requires being willing and able to go inside and re-imagine our own inner life. There we find our gifts and unique offerings. I hope SCA can be a common space to share your gifts, seek support and learn from each other. Maybe you will step forward to volunteer and share one of your gifts even if it feels a little scary!

Let me leave you with a question and invite you to be curious and sense inwardly how it resonates with you. I would be delighted to hear what you have to say.

What are your gifts and how do they inform your work with
others?

The Clinician's Guide to Getting Started in Private Practice

Michelle Bales, MA, LMHC

Just starting a private practice?  Have a practice but looking to take it to the next level?
Join us on Friday, September 18th, for a practice-building extravaganza!  Our main speaker will be Michelle Bales, MA, LMHC, who will present "The Clinician's Guide to Getting Started in Private Practice." Following the main presentation, Michelle will present a breakout session on creating a website for your practice. In addition, we are excited to have two additional breakout sessions. The first will be presented by Carolyn Rodenberg, MA, LMFT, CCH, and will focus on working effectively with physicians. The second will be presented by SCA Past President AnnMarie Stankovich MA, LMHC, NCC, and will look at specific roadblocks to success with an emphasis on the meaning of money.  Here's more from each speaker about their presentation and their backgrounds.

Main Presentation

The Clinician's Guide to Getting Started in Private Practice: Thinking Like a Business Owner

Michelle Bales, MA, LMHC

About the Workshop:

Are you scared of delving into private practice for fear of the economy, technological advancements, or because it seems insurmountable? Most practitioners are seasoned at being effective counselors, but weren't taught how to think like business owners.  Some of us also associate the terms "business management" with an unpleasant reaction. This workshop is designed to demystify the process of starting a private practice, and help participants begin integrating a business mindset.

Learning objectives include the first steps toward a private practice, an understanding of the essentials of thinking like a business owner as well as a clinician, and the basics of developing a professional website.

About the Presenter:

Michelle Bales, MA, LMHC, maintains a private practice in downtown Seattle. She draws her experience from over a decade in human services, from the chronically mentally ill, to those seeking self-enhancement. Two and a half years ago, Michelle took the steps towards transitioning from community mental health to private practice. Along with general therapeutic issues, she enjoys working with twenty-somethings, gifted adults, grief & loss issues, and introverts. In addition, she is passionate about helping others pursue their goal to be private practitioners via business consulting and teaching.  For more information about Michelle, visit her website: www.michellebales.com

Carolyn Rodenberg, MA, LMFT, CCH specializes in helping clients heal the emotional and sensory dynamics of pain and illness. She has been in practice for 21 years, including 15 years in multidisciplinary medical settings and offers consultation to therapists on working collaboratively with physicians. Breakout Session
Understanding How Your Beliefs Around Money Impact Your Success:

Presented by AnnMarie Stankovich, MA, LMHC, NCC

This break out session will include an opportunity to discuss personal roadblocks to success, with an emphasis around money issues. We will explore your current relationship with money, getting paid what you are worth, your personal goals and feelings regarding financial success, and much more!

AnnMarie Stankovich is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Certified Business Coach, and owner of AMS Counseling and Consultation, LLC. In addition to being a Counselor and Coach, her experience includes: account executive assistant for an advertising company (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) marketing assistant for a family preservation program (Tampa, FL), and she assisted in marketing at a partial hospitalization program (Atlanta, GA). In AnnMarie's first year of private practice, she was able to reach her financial and business goals by learning the successful marketing strategies needed to have a thriving business. The first six months of her journey were spent discovering what works and what doesn't work when it comes to marketing and promoting a practice. AMS Counseling and Consultation is a private counseling and consulting practice helping people identify their strengths and develop their optimal potential in their personal and professional lives.

Psychotherapy with Multicultural Couples
Working Effectively withg Cultural Identity and Relationship Conflict

presented by Harriet Cannon, M.C., LMFT, LMHC

Multicultural couples presenting for relationship therapy in a private practice setting are more sophisticated today than was the norm 20 years ago. They are well traveled and comfortable with technology. People become couples via Facebook, on business trips, while studying or living abroad, or meeting through Match dot com, where they then solidify the relationship through email and the ease of international travel.

I encourage therapists not to be wooed by the sophistication of their multicultural clients who appear to navigate so effectively in more than one culture and language. Multicultural clients often minimize their cultural differences, both because they are too close to the problems created by their cultural differences to see the effect on the relationship, and because cultural differences add a second discouraging layer to resolving conflict in the relationship.

This presentation will explore the question "How much of the current problem is cultural and how much is other relationship dynamics?" Participants will leave with an understanding of treatment directions and with an awareness of instilling hope in multicultural clients. Participants will understand the following three concepts:

1. Always assess for cultural identity in transition. Multicultural couples commonly experience a spike in conflict in their relationship when one partner is entering a cultural identity transition and isn't aware of it. Cultural identity does not remain static but changes through the life cycle. People who have moved internationally expect difficulties of culture shock characteristic of the first year living outside the home culture. What they do not know is that with each life stage transition a person has to grieve culture loss and evolve his/her new vision of mixed cultural identity. What cultural losses or unaddressed expectations are causing conflict in the relationship right now?

2. Assess for 'Code Switching' in the couple communication. Many multicultural couples ignore the fact that the power and the cultural advantage of the partner native to the land in which the couple lives never goes away. Under emotional stress, in transitions or times of conflict, a second language speaker will lose facility in both auditory and vocabulary fluency. This 'code switching' - not remembering a word or losing a phrase so you translate in your head before you speak - can cause shame and resentment. The therapist can assist both partners to explore how 'code switching' may be manifesting in the couple's conflict and then assist to create strategies to minimize it.

 3. The therapist can facilitate opportunities for 'Cultural Refueling.' Cultural refueling is the process of bringing in more of the home culture when a partner can't go 'home' anytime soon. It can be as simple as a song or as big as your partner committing to language lessons. It is a healing process for one partner to acknowledge the specifics of culture loss right now and for the other partner to commit to a specific accommodation to see it through. A therapist can help a couple co-create a plan for cultural refueling.

Please join me at the October 2009 SCA meeting to further discuss these concepts and strategies.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: It takes skill to hold fast in the fire of change. To be a positive change agent requires not only understanding the interface of personal and collective transformation, but how you relate systemically to the forces of change. In this experiential workshop for practitioners and leaders, you will discover personal essential skills for transformation as you clarify your role in the cauldron of change on Planet Earth. Learn approaches to stress, both negative and creative, as you intensify your work in the world. Explore the integration of inner and outer purpose. Learn about ways to recognize authentic guidance from distracting seductions. Understand the principals needed to midwife the old paradigm of consumption to a new era of global transformation. Effectively help others through chaotic, troubled times while you integrally tune up your personal journey, working creatively with collective synergy.

James O'Dea is a global transformation catalyst, formerly a senior leader for 3 widely acclaimed international global change organizations, now a consultant and global presenter on consciousness and social healing. He is a member of the global Evolutionary Leaders group convened by Deepak Chopra and a member of The World Wisdom Council. James is currently engaged in an international team coordinating depth reconciliation work with 40 Israeli and Palestinian psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers. He is a key member of other organizations at the frontiers of conscious, global and social change.

Susan Burns is a licensed mental health counselor and advanced clinical hypnotherapist in private practice in Bellevue, WA. She is formerly the catalyst and founder of a large Seattle and Northwest learning community, a regional hub of community groups, focused on personal transformation and collective change. She has introduced several noted presenters to the Northwest community, organized and supported numerous grass roots initiatives in health, social justice, and environmental issues. Having created learning communities for hundreds of leaders, she is stepping out as a leader in her own right. Presently, in addition to her private practice, she facilitates key workshops independently and with global leaders on transformation under the auspices of The Association for Humanistic Psychology.

NOTE: The plan for this Oct. 24 professional and experiential workshop is to co-present on this subject, integrally involving participants as a learning community. However, James is involved in Palestinian/Israeli Peace Dialogues which may pre-empt his presence. In that event, James will have a remote presence through interactive video while Susan facilitates the workshop.

MONTHLY GROUP HAS ROOM FOR NEW MEMBERS

This group meets Saturdays once a month, from 9am to 1 pm

It is wonderful for me to be a part of this space that we create where we endeavor to be genuine and open, exploring our own ability to risk and to be open to others. The groups are a combination of exercise and process work. The exercises energize and open our physical system. It is a playful way to
explore different attitudes and feeling states and sets the stage for the work we do each session.

Along with process-oriented therapy we use other modalities for the work and take advantage of the extra energy provided by having a group of people. The group provides a supportive, non-judgmental environment to explore the issues that come up in our lives and in our interactions with one another. Group is a wonderful adjunct to individual therapy and gives us an opportunity to explore and create the deeper connection that we all long for.

Finding Ease Within Our Bodies as a Gate To Our Essence
A Workshop with Cornelia Gerken

October 2-3, 2009
$245. or $195. by September 5

In this workshop we will give special attention to those old pains - ones we have adapted to and live with constantly. They are the areas we have brushed aside, becoming numb to their messages. We will open a compassionate space where these parts can be heard again. Establishing a loving relationship so that the discomfort, pain or incapacity has a chance to inform us and teach us and become a bridge to our essence.

These aspects of our bodies can contribute as a vital part of a full life instead of as shunned hidden baggage that we become accustomed to. These parts of us are often non-verbal and cannot be directly accessed through our mind or will. They rely on a different type of contact, communication, and presence in order to be heard. This weekend offers a gentle yet radical invitation to "come home", to listen, embrace and find a new embodied sense of being.

In this workshop we will use awareness, sensing, touch, developmental and intentional movement, dialogue with our bodies, and somatic re-patterning. The workshop is an introduction into CoreSoma.

Cornelia Gerken, CMP, ECP, integrates different  psychosomatic and psycho-spiritual approaches.  She developed her own synthesis, CoreSoma, which looks at the somatic and bodily reality as the foundation of our manifestation here. She is the Co-Director of the International Institute of CoreEvolution and CoreSoma. In her work she shares a compassion and joy for life, bringing a deep presence of the feminine.

Are you a woman over 40 who never had kids?
Come join a community of women in a 6 week exploration group. The purpose of this group is to support women to explore what it means to not follow the path usually chosen by women in this society. While grief can be a part of this journey, the freedom we have, and what we chose to do with that freedom, is a major characteristic of this group.

"Thanks once again for creating a nurturing environment for our support group. I received so much insight and awareness from the sharing, and I especially enjoyed the exercises and rituals. You are fabulous at creating room for exploration and possibility within a safe, structured environment."

"I thoroughly enjoyed (the group) and feel that the effects are ushering me into the next phase of growth in my life."

"This powerful group is helping me to hold a healthy and positive vision of myself in later years, replacing the fear-based one I've carried for so long. Wow! Thank you!"

The 6 weeks cover:
  • Who am I as a woman who never had kids?
  • Lost & found:  Dreams, roles & relationships
  • Body image and menopause
  • How do I care for myself when I become an elder?
  • Do I need to grieve?
  • What will I leave this world?
The next group starts September 17th and will run for 6 consecutive Thursday nights from 6:30-9pm.  Participation is limited to 6 women.

The group is led by Jane B.G. Tornatore, PhD, (www.doctortornatore.com) who is committed to helping people shift old patterns so they can lead a freer life.

For more information and to pre-register call:  206-769-8108

"I would recommend Jane's group to every woman. She brings up very deep issues that are worth looking at and sharing in a supportive group. I felt very safe in this group because of the skill Jane brought to it. I would even take this class again."

"What is this group magic...The humility to be real in front of others when we speak, we speak for many...when we hear, we hear for many..."
