FRIDAY'S TASTING:
2009 Domaine Houchart Cotes De Provence Rosé $13.99 a bottle, $142.70 a case, or $11.89 a
bottle as part of a mixed case.
This blend is 35% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 25% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Mouvedre and 5% other varietals. This is a delicious, fresh and fruity dry Rosé. It's special freshness comes from the unique method of harvesting, where the grapes are immediately placed in gondolas filled with CO2 gas and covered with thermal blankets to eclude oxygen and keep the grapes cool under the hot Provencal sun. This very versatile wine is delicious as an apertif and perfect for summer meals. A fresh Rosé with a pretty salmon pink color made from a blend of Rhone and Bordeaux varietals. The grapes were fermented separately before tank aging. The aromas reveal citrus and strawberries with elegant flavors of red berries and watermelon. There are mineral notes and a clean easy finish. The wine is lingering, refreshing, lip-smacking and full of charm. Wine Spectator-Best Buy, Wine and Spirits-Top 100 2010.
2009 Dupeuble Beaujolais Gamay $15.99 a bottle, $163.10 a case, or $13.59 a
bottle as part of a mixed case.
The Dupeuble family is making some of the finest wine
in all of Beaujolais, even though it is not a grand cru. "Just classic Beaujolais, with the breed of one of
the Crus. This is a flat out steal at its price!" The 2009
surpasses the impeccably balanced 2007 in concentration and texture,
while maintaining the other qualities that make us love Dupeuble
Beaujolais year in and year out: knock-out perfume, tannins as smooth as
velvet, and uncompromising
class.
Keller Estate Oro De Plato Sonoma Coast 2006 $19.99 a bottle, $203.90 a case, or $16.99 a bottle as part of a mixed case.
In Spanish, Oro De Plata means "silver from gold". At Keller Estate, the name refers to the stainless steel fermented Chardonnay, crafted to highlight the flavors of the grape, yet without the characteristics of oak so often found in California Chardonnays. A Chardonnay with a Burgundian flair, this wine shares the minerality found in Chablis, but with brighter, richer, more floral characteristics consumers have come to appreciate its incredible versatility with food. Simple preparations like lightly dressed salad and grilled fish and chicken are elevated by the bright acidity and aromatics, yet the wine is equally delicious with spicy foods such as southwestern pork loin with black beans. You won't find any oak, vanilla or buttery characteristics here. Instead, what you have is a pure expression of Chardonnay fruit. Cold, stainless steel fermentation and lack of malolactic fermentation allow exotic aromas of peach flowers, lime zest and guava to come through along with pear and mineral notes. There is intense, rich sweet fruit impression on the palette, even though the wine is quite dry. The ample, bright acidity keeps the wine fresh and buoyant, and the finish long.
