Giovanni Almondo Arneis Vigna Sparse 2009 $19.99 a bottle, $203.90 for a case, or $16.99 bottle as part of a mixed case.
The
sandy soil of north Piemonte is home to the appellation Roero and the
indigenous variety, Arneis. Giovanni Almondo is a master of the rare
variety, crafting aromatic and mineral wines that rival any of the best
white wines in Italy. The 2009 Vigna Sparse dazzles
right out of the bottle; floral and fruity yet with a chalky mineral
streak, the wine is wildly complex. The mid-palate has layers of
concentrated citrus fruit and the finish is stony and a minute long.
Pair this wine as you would with a steely white burgundy, with roasted
chicken, delicate fish dishes or veal scallopine.
Vigna Sparse is
the bulk of the production at Almondo. It is a blend of parcels, all
above 380 meters. He farms without chemicals. The wine is fermented in
tank and rests sur lie for 3 months. They are widely regarded as the top estate in Roero.
NOT A TUSCAN WINE, BUT HAD TO GO WITH IT! THE WINE IS WAY TOO GOOD!

BUONDONNO CHIANTI CLASSICO 2007 $22.99 a bottle, $234.50 for a case, or $19.54 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Hand sorted and hand selected Sangiovese grapes are used to make this gorgeous wine. Added, are small amounts of Merlot and Canaiolo to round off the flavor. The wine is then aged in small and medium sized oak casks that are second and third passage barriques, for about a year. This allows for a minimal use of oak, and during this time, the wine becomes richer and more rounded. The color is an intense ruby red, the fragrance has aromas of ripe red fruits with hints of spices and vanilla. The tannins are sweet and persistent. The wine finishes so nicely, and is a perfect example of what Chianti Classico should taste like.

BUONDONNO CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA 2006 $39.99 a bottle, $407.90 for a case, or $34.00 a bottle as part of a mixed case
"We only produce the Riserva in years when the quality is particularly good". This wine comes from a selection of the very best Sangiovese grapes from the vines to the South of Casavechia and from the small Sicelle vineyard. These vineyards are rich in stone, are kept meticulous, and the yield per hectare is particularly low. The wine ages in Slovenian oak casks known as "botti" and as well, in 500 litre French oak casks called "carati" from Allier. The ageing process is completed with a long maturation in the bottle. The wine is a rich ruby color; the aroma has overtones of wild red berries with hints of cinnamon, leather and tobacco. The tannins are a bit strong and well balanced. The aftertaste is lingering and persistent. Nice, and long.

DUCKHORN DECOY CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007 $29.99 a bottle, $305.89 for a case, or $25.49 a bottle as part of a mixed case
This
appealing Napa Valley wine highlights the complexity of the Cabernet
Sauvignon varietal. Since 1978, Duckhorn Vineyards has been producing
Cabernet Sauvignon that embodies the diversity of Napa Valley
winegrowing and offers classic Cabernet elements of currant, cherry,
plum and olive.
RAFEAL PALACIOS LOURO GODELLO BLANCO 2008 $22.99 a bottle, $234.50 a case, or $19.54 a bottle in a mixed case.
Made from 100% Godello harvested from both of Rafael's estate vineyards, as well as some purchased fruit from neighboring growers. The grapes were grown on 12-32 year old vines in sandy soils that were created as the granite sub-stratum degraded over centuries. The wine was aged for 8 months in foudre. This wine is gorgeous and is perfect for the new Spring season!
VELENOSI IL BRECCIAROLO 2006 $19.99 a bottle, $203.89 for a case, or $16.99 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Il
Brecciarolo [Eel breTCH ee R o low] refers to the broken stones typical
of the soils in this area. The heartiness of the Montepulciano
dominates while the Sangiovese lifts the aromatics and brightens the
wine. It has a lovely soft palate, with tannins that give the wine
structure, but are so soft and refined they almost feel creamy, while
great acidity follows through the finish.
