Visit Spain with Tewksbury Fine Wine
January 15th, 2010
Greetings!

What a great way to escape ... try wine from a far away country.  Friday, we are going to open a few absolutely delicious wines from Spain and pair with some tapas.  A couple of our favorite red grapes, Tempranillo and Garnacha (you may know this grape as Grenache), produce fantastic wines in Spain.  Coupled with the delicious white grape, Albarino, and you have a blockbuster lineup!

Also, after the holiday season our "End of Vintage" bin has been replenished with many one of a kind gems.  Offered at 20% off, you should definitely check it out this weekend!

Now on to the details for Friday's tasting.
January Wines of the Month:
Do Ferreiro Albarino 2007,
$27.99 a bottle, $285.48 for a case, or $23.79 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Located in the Salnes Valley of Rias Baixas, Do Ferreiro is a relatively young winery with a very old past. While this family-owned winery was founded in 1973, the current owner, Gerardo Mendez, sources the grapes from five hectares of vineyards that have been in his family for generations. The Salnes Valley is known throughout the region as being the best subzone of Rias Baixas. This ocean-facing bowl creates a unique terroir, that distinguishes the Salnes Valley from the rest of Rias Baixas. Believing that great wine is made through a balance of terroir and winemaking, Gerardo seeks to preserve the terroir in his winemaking. By taking great care and adhering to organic principles in the cultivation of the grapes, Gerardo ensures that the grapes reflect the wonders of their home.

Bodega Abanico Eternum Viti 2007, $21.99 a bottle, $224.28 for a case, or $18.69 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Another fantastic Tempranillo from Spain!  This one is definitely packed with loads of flavor and power - an absolutely perfect wine to help you warm up this winter!  We recommend opening it a little before drinking to allow it to open up.  The Wine Advocate reviewed the wine and awarded the wine 90 points, "A glass-coating opaque purple in color, it offers up a fragrant bouquet of earth notes, mineral, spice box, and blackberry. This leads to a dense, ripe, powerful wine which manages to keep its tannins under control."
PSI 2007,
$44.99 a bottle, $458.88 for a case, or $38.24 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Having established Pingus (one of the best wines from Spain which sells for $799.00 a bottle!) as a new benchmark for greatness in Spanish wine, Peter Sisseck embarked on a new quest: to produce a wine that captures the soul of Ribera del Duero.   And so he conceived Ψ PSI, named for the 23rd letter in the Greek alphabet.  Working closely with the growers, they have endeavored to improve the health of the vineyards and produce grapes of a much higher quality than were there before.  While making the wine they employed long, gentle macerations to obtain a harmonious extraction of flavors. Aged in old oak casks, the wine evolved with subtle nuances and a complexity which is very compelling.  Only 4,000 cases were produced and we were lucky enough to obtain a couple!  You really shouldn't miss a chance to taste this wine from one of the greatest producers in Spain.

January
Wines of the Month:

J Hofstatter Pinot Grigio 2008
$19.99 a bottle, $23.88 a case, or $16.99 a bottles as part of a mixed case.

A Pinot Grigio from one of our favorite producers!  This elegant wine is bright yellow in color with copper reflexes.  It has a clear fruit aroma of pear, with warm light spices.  Definitely firm on the palate, velvety and full-flavored with well integrated acidity.  A deliciously, very round and very satisfying wine.  Try some with a bowl of seafood chowdah!

Fontana Mesta Blanco Macabeo-Moscatel 2008, $10.99 a bottle, $112.08 for a case, or $9.34 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Bodegas Fontana is an authentic family bodega belonging to the Cantarero Morales family.  The Mesta Blanco is a blend of 70% Macabeo with the balance coming from the aromatic Moscatel. Pale yellow in color, this wine has an aromatic fruity nose, with pineapple and citrus flavors. Mesta Blanco has a good acidity and is a crisp, juicy and refreshing white wine. Pairs well with snacks, fish and light cheeses. We had it with a citrus glazed salmon (part of the healthy January diet) and it was delicious!

Ruca Malen Malbec 2006,
$18.99 a bottle, $193.68 for a case, or $16.14 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Looking back at 2009, we definitely saw the rise of Argentinian Malbec!  With its firm structure, yet easy drinkability we think its popularity will continue to soar!  This Malbec from Ruca Malen definitely fits the bill.  It has a blackberry aroma with a touch of oakiness on the nose. Juicy blackberries on the palate mingle with licorice and violet flavors to create an intriguing nuance.  Simply put ... delicious!  And, very versatile, making it perfect for weekday meals.

Paul Hobbs Felino Vina Cobos Cabernet Sauvignon 2008,
$24.99 a bottle, $254.88 for a case, or $21.24 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Wow!  We think this 2008 Cabernet blows the pants off the 2007, it is that good!  The gravely soils and high elevation of the Felino Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards infuse this wine with classic Cabernet flavors of blackberry and cassis.  Farming for low yields intensifies the wine's concentration and complexity.  It is a big, but friendly, Cabernet Sauvignon that could intimidate many cabs from around the world at twice this price - honest.  Only 4,750 cases produced, so try this soon!

We'll open the wines for Friday's tasting around 4:00.  As always, we thank you for your continued support!

Cheers!
