Greetings!
Wow! The holidays really flew! Happy New Year! Yes, it is a new year, a new month ... so time to introduce the new Tewksbury Fine Wine's January Wines of the Month! To start off the new year, we have chosen a couple of wines from producers who have made the perennial favorite list and a couple new wines you should try!
2010 will be filled with new and exciting events from Tewksbury Fine Wine. Be on the lookout for invitations to dinners with winemakers and prominent speakers from the industry, once a month "themed" wine tastings in the store, and tastings in the store featuring some of your favorite winemakers! Of course we will continue to offer selections from our favorite producers, new boutique producers we discover from around the world, and delicious wines just waiting to be paired with your dinners.
Now on to the details for the Wines of the Month and Friday's tasting.

January Wines of the Month:
|
J Hofstatter Pinot Grigio 2008, $19.99 a bottle, $203.88 for a case, or $16.99 a bottle as part of a mixed case
A Pinot Grigio from one of our favorite producers is the perfect way to start the new year. This elegant wine is bright yellow in color with copper reflexes. It has a clear fruit aroma of pear, with warm light spices. Definitely firm on the palate, velvety and full-flavored with well integrated acidity. A deliciously, very round and very satisfying wine. We can't wait to try some with a hot bowl of seafood chowdah!
|
Fontana Mesta Blanco Macabeo-Moscatel 2008, $10.99 a bottle, $112.08 for a case, or $9.34 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Bodegas Fontana is an authentic family bodega belonging to the Cantarero Morales family. They are dedicated to their vineyards spreading across the
Baja Alcarria and the Mancha Alta of Toledo. The Mesta Blanco is a blend of 70% Macabeo with the balance coming from the aromatic Moscatel. Pale yellow in color, this wine has an aromatic fruity nose, with pineapple and citrus flavors. Mesta Blanco has a good acidity and is a crisp, juicy and refreshing white wine. Pairs well with snacks, fish and light cheeses. We had it with a citrus glazed salmon (part of the healthy January diet) earlier this week and it was delicious!
|
Ruca Malen Malbec 2006, $18.99 a bottle, $193.68 for a case, or $16.14 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Looking back at 2009, we definitely saw the rise of Argentinian Malbec! With its firm structure, yet easy drinkability we think its popularity will continue to soar! This Malbec from Ruca Malen definitely fits the bill. It has a blackberry aroma with a touch of oakiness on the nose. Juicy blackberries on the palate mingle with licorice and violet flavors to create an intriguing nuance. Simply put ... delicious! And, very versatile, making it perfect for weekday meals.
|
Paul Hobbs Felino Vina Cobos Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, $24.99 a bottle, $254.88 for a case, or $21.24 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Wow! We think this 2008 Cabernet blows the pants off the 2007, it is that good! The gravely soils and high elevation of the Felino Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards infuse this wine with classic Cabernet flavors of blackberry and cassis. Farming for low yields intensifies the wine's concentration and complexity. It is a big, but friendly, Cabernet Sauvignon that could intimidate many cabs from around the world at twice this price - honest. Only 4,750 cases produced, so try this soon!

Wines for Friday's Tasting:
J Hofstatter Pinot Grigio 2008 $19.99 a bottle, $23.88 a case, or $16.99 a bottles as part of a mixed case.
One of our January Wines of the Month. Please see the column to the left for a detailed description.
Evening Land Pinot Noir 2008 $27.99 a bottle, $285.48 a case, or $23.79 a bottles as part of a mixed case.
Evening Land puts together a star-studded team of winemakers who deliver a delicious Pinot Noir! The wine highlights the minerality, intensity and black cherry fruit that has put their Oregon Pinot Noir on the map these last few years. We happen to think it is delicious and one of the best Pinots we've tasted for under $30! Try it this weekend with chicken braised with wild mushrooms - yum!
B.R. Cohn SyrCab 2007 $36.99 a bottle, $377.28 a case, or $31.44 a bottles as part of a mixed case.
Warm up this weekend with this great Syrah - Cabernet blend from B.R. Cohn. This wine is as unique as its trademark name. The combination of these two varietals produces a wine with exotic briar, plum and black cherry fruit, surrounded by mocha, caramel, smoke and a hint of mint and earth. Aging for 18 months in premium French oak barrels produces a wine of complexity and balance with silky tannins and a smooth, long finish. Very easy to drink and simply delicious!
