Greetings!
Thanksgiving is just around the corner and we have many wines picked out for you to make that perfect match. Food and wine is a match made in heaven, as the acidity in the wine balances the natural fats and oils found in food. Our Thanksgiving turkey happens to have less fat than other foods, so we'll want to choose red wines that are lighter to medium-bodied with softer tannins and whites that are aromatic or fuller in body to compliment the turkey. The spices, herbs, and sauces we add give us more hints for the perfect marriage.
We always encourage you to drink what you love ... if you are looking for a red wine to pair with turkey there are a few that we would encourage you to try.
- Beaujolais from the southern end of Burgundy pairs very nicely with the tang of cranberry and the turkey. Very easy to sip, lots of bright fruit, and soft tannins make it a natural match. (We'll have the delicious Beaujolais fom Domaine du Vissoux open Friday night.)
- The cherry and spice flavors known to be in Pinot Noir, make another delicious match. Try one from Oregon, California, Austria, New Zealand or Burgundy!
- A different match comes from Italy. Barbera has modest tannins that balance the fruit, making it again a great match. Come try one of our favorites.
Are you looking for a white wine to pair with your turkey dinner? For white wines and turkey we have a few for you to try, too.
- We have a delicious Gruner Veltliner from Austria that will be open Friday night for you to taste. The smokiness adds a fabulous nuance to the wine. (Details on the Ott Fass 4 Gruner Veltliner is below.)
- Aromatic Rieslings pair nicely with turkey and happen to be perfect as an apperitif. (Try the St Urbans-Hoff Riesling!)
- And of course, for all of our Chardonnay fans, Chardonnay works great with turkey, too. We have a terrific selection of Chardonnays.
In addition, we cannot forget our beer drinkers this Thanksgiving. Most important when pairing beer with the turkey, is to steer away from beers with a lot of "hoppy" flavor. The hops will overpower the delicate meat. We think ales and dark lagers work best with "the bird". They'll accent the turkey meat and all the trimmings. The wines we'll open this Friday include a few of our favorites for this Thanksgiving. And we'll be opening wines everyday between now and Thanksgiving to help you make that perfect match!

Wines for Friday's Tasting!
|
Ott Fass 4 Gruner Veltliner 2007 $23.99 a bottle, $244.68 for a case, or $20.39 a bottle as part of a mixed case We've
decided that this year we would feature this Gruner Veltliner as one of
our choices for Thanksgiving. The Ott FASS 4 is a wonderful food
wine. A smokiness is evident over a background of tangerine and
slight grapefruit. The spiciness and fresh velvety texture coupled with racy
acidity makes this a terrific food wine. It simply is a classic Gruner
Veltliner with a smooth finish. And, everyone who has tried it already,
has come back for more!

Domaine du Vissoux Beaujolais Vielle Vignes 2008 $18.99 a bottle, $193.68 for a case, or $16.14 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Domaine
du Vissoux has shown that it is totally possible to be completely
natural and great, at once. It is as natural a Beaujolais as one could
have had in a café in Lyon in the late 40's. The Vielles Vignes (old
vines) is the emblematic cuvée from this estate. Freshness meets
concentration with this wine and shows in ripe red fruit aromas and
flavors. Try this wine to see what Beaujolais is really all about!

Domaine Isabel Ferrando Colombis Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2007 $64.99 a bottle, $662.88 for a case, or $55.24 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Isabel Ferrando is demonstrating a commitment to turn out world class wines from Chateauneuf-du-Pape. If you have not had a chance to try one of her previous vintages, the 2007 is without a doubt not to be missed. Wine Advocate reviewed the wine and awarded it a stunning 97 points. Comments: "Another wine that performed far better from bottle than it did last
year, is the 500-case lot of 100% old vine Grenache, the Isabel Ferrando
2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Colombis, which is aged completely in cement
tanks prior to being bottled without filtration. An exquisite bouquet
of kirsch liqueur, licorice, lavender, pepper, and spice soars from the
glass. The aromatics may be even more intense than those of the Charles
Giraud. This full-bodied, opulent wine represents an extraordinary
expression of old vine Grenache that is pure, rich, and majestic. It
can be drunk early in life or cellared for 15+ years. Tasting at
Domaine de Saint-Prefert was one of the most memorable tastings I have
had in 2009." Yes, we'll have it open for you to try Friday night! You will love it, and we have magnums available, too! Hooray!

November Wines of the Month:
Paringa Sparkling Shiraz 2008 $14.99 a bottle, 152.88 for a case, or $12.74 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Yes,
this is a sparkling Shiraz, it is red, and we think it is perfect for
the Fall. The juice used to make Paringa's Sparkling is the same as
the Paringa Shiraz, except the result has bubbles and a dosage (a touch
of sweetening that is added to sparkling wines before bottling). It's a
dark, deep magenta red, rich, creamy, persistent, and juicy - full of
raspberry fruit. It is gorgeous to look at and surprisingly complex and
stunning to drink. Wonderful as a pre-dinner drink, it will be
fantastic at Thanksgiving and excellent with desert. You gotta try
it!
Ott Fass 4 Gruner Veltliner 2008 $23.99 a bottle, $244.68 for a case, or $20.39 a bottle as part of a mixed case
One of our featured wines for Friday's tasting. For a complete description, please see the column to the left.
Domaine du Vissoux Beaujolais Veilles Vignes 2008 $18.99 a bottle, $193.68 for a case, or $16.14 a bottle as part of a mixed case
One of our featured wines for Friday's tasting. For a complete description, please see the column to the left. Buondonno Chianti Classico 2007 $22.99 a bottle, $234.88 for a case, or $19.54 a bottle as part of a mixed case
As mentioned last week, when visiting Tuscany last month, Andrea fell in love with this estate! Buondonno's vineyards are certified organic. The Buondonno Chianti Classico has an intense ruby red color, the fragrance has aromas of ripe red fruits with hints of spices and vanilla. The tannins are sweet and persistent. For all of our Chianti lovers, you have to try this wine!! See why Andrea fell in love with this estate.
