Veraison!
August 13th, 2009
Greetings!

During the month of August the vineyards throughout the northern hemisphere are filled with activity.  One of the indicators that harvest is fast approaching is when the red grapes start to soften and turn from green to red.  This change in color is what is known as veraison.  Throughout the month, growers are keeping a close eye on their vines and may even perform a green harvest to remove less ripe bunches or excess bunches of grapes.  The goal behind a green harvest is to concentrate the flavor in the remaining grapes.  In really warm regions, some growers may actually start to harvest their grapes in August.  It all depends on the weather!

Now on to the wines for Friday's tasting.  These are detailed below.  We look forward to seeing you over the weekend and helping you choose a few bottles or even a case to try!
Wines for Friday's Tasting:
Barone di Valporte Passerina 2008
$16.99 a bottle, $173.28 for a case, or $14.44 a bottle as part of a mixed case

What did the leaders of the world drink when they were at the G8 Summit?  You guessed it ... the Barone di Valforte Passerina!  The Tenute Barone di Valforte vineyards cover 42 hectares in various communes in the Teramo hills in Abruzzo. The investment these gentleman farmers have made in their winery is truly impressive. After growing and selling their grapes for years, they took no shortcuts when they decided to bottle the product of their vineyards. They grow the Passerina grapes on the cooler, north-facing slopes which is why this white wine is able to show so much freshness and finesse since it is from a warm area.  The wine has fabulous floral notes on the nose.  It is refreshing and pretty, everything white wine should be!  Truly amazing with raw seafood or as an aperitif.  The wine has a low alcohol content, just 11.5%!  It is delicious and a must try this August!

Brigaldara Valpolicella 2007
$17.99 a bottle, $183.48 for a case, or $15.29 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Vineyards fill the hills just east of Lago di Garda in Northern Italy, the home of Valpolicella and Brigaldara.  Valpolicella is made from a blend of grapes including Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella.  This deep, ruby colored wine is filled with fresh blackberries and cherries with hints of mint and cedar.  It is very well-structured, rich and generous, waiting to be admired throughout its long, lingering finish.  You just have to taste the fresh style of Brigaldara, the result of Stefano Cesari's passion for wines from Valpolicella!
Downing Family Fly by Night Zinfandel
$27.99 a bottle, $285.48 for a case, or $23.79 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Looking for a delicious, well-balanced Zinfandel for your barbecue meals this weekend?  We have just the one!  From an organically farmed vineyard, this unique Oakville Zinfandel has developed a powerful structure that is sweet on the front palate and spicy on the back.  Black currants, wild huckleberries, and a melting essence of dark chocolate emerge from this full-bodied wine that finishes with a note of vanilla and cracked pepper.  This wine makes a great companion to almost any meal and is out of this world with barbecue!

Prosecco has been very popular this summer, and this rosato (pink) Prosecco is just delicious.  It is a perfect bottle of bubbly for these summer nights.  Pink, easy to sip, dry and delicious.  Very refreshing, crisp with ripe strawberries, lots of cherries, and of course those tiny bubbles.

Velenosi Il Brecciarolo
$19.99 a bottle, $203.88 for a case, or $16.99 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Il Brecciarolo [Eel breTCH ee R o low] refers to the broken stones typical of the soils in the area of Tuscany where the grapes for this wine are grown.  The heartiness of the Montepulciano grape dominates while the Sangiovese lifts the aromatics and brightens the wine.  It has a lovely soft palate, with tannins giving the wine structure, but are so soft and refined they almost feel creamy.  The flavors and tannins are perfectly balanced with the great acidity that follows through the finish.  A long standing favorite!

We hope you are enjoying your summer.  We'll open the wines for Friday's tasting around 4:00.  Looking forward to seeing you soon, and most importantly, thanks for your continued support!

Cheers!
