August Wines of the Month!
August 6th, 2009
Greetings!

For the month of August we have decided to offer a Taste of Italy.  We figured if we couldn't be enjoying the lakes of Northern Italy, basking under the Tuscan sun, or sitting in traffic on the Amalfi coast this month, we would do the next best thing and feature wines from Italy!  Our selected wines of the month represent some terrific values that can be found in Italy and we hope you will enjoy each and everyone of them.

The August Wines of the Month and the wines featured this Friday are detailed below.  We look forward to seeing you over the weekend and helping you choose a few to try!  A mixed case sampler of the August Wines of the Month can be yours for only $190.87, including sales tax!  The sampler includes:
  • 3 Terre Deor delle Venezie Prosecco Raboso,
  • 2 Pra Soave Classico,
  • 2 Barone di Valforte Passerina,
  • 3 Brigaldara Valpolicella, and
  • 2 Velenosi Il Brecciarolo
On to the details!
August's Wines of the Month:
Terre Deor Delle Venezie Prosecco Raboso
$12.99 a bottle, $132.48 for a case, or $11.04 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Prosecco has been very popular this summer, and this rosato (pink) Prosecco is just delicious - it had to be included as one of the wines of the month.  It is a perfect bottle of bubbly for these summer nights.  Pink, easy to sip, dry and delicious. It will delight and at this price it totally over delivers!  Very refreshing,  crisp with ripe strawberries, lots of cherries, and of course those tiny bubbles.

Prà Soave Classico 2008
$17.99 a bottle, $183.48 for a case, or $15.29 a bottle as part of a mixed case

The Prà Soave Classico will show you what real Soave is all about, it is considered the best Soave in Italy.  The Prà family crafts the wine from 100% Garganega grown only in the Classico zone.  (The Classico zone is the original area for Soave - before it was expanded and filled with vineyards used for wines that were mass-produced.)  Filled with crisp minerality, touches of citrus, and hints of wildflowers and hay; it is very refined and persistent on the finish.  Brothers Sergio and Graziano Prà have invested a lot of time and energy into making world class Soave. Come and taste for yourself... it is delicious!
Barone di Valforte Passerina 2008
$16.99 a bottle, $173.28 for a case, or $14.44 a bottle as part of a mixed case

What did the leaders of the world drink when they were at the G8 Summit?  You guessed it ... the Barone di Valforte Passerina!  The Tenute Barone di Valforte vineyards cover 42 hectares in various communes in the Teramo hills in Abruzzo. The investment these gentleman farmers have made in their winery is truly impressive. After growing and selling their grapes for years, they took no shortcuts when they decided to bottle the products of their vineyards. They grow the Passerina grapes on the cooler, north-facing slopes which is why this white wine is able to show so much freshness and finesse since it is from a warm area.  The wine has fabulous floral notes on the nose.  It is refreshing and pretty, everything white wine should be!  Truly amazing with raw seafood or as an aperitif.  The wine has a low alcohol content, just 11.5%!  It is delicious and a must try this August!
Brigaldara Valpolicella 2007
$17.99 a bottle, $183.48 for a case, or $15.29 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Vineyards fill the hills just east of Lago di Garda in Northern Italy, the home of Valpolicella and Brigaldara.  Valpolicella is made from a blend of grapes including Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella.  This deep, ruby colored wine is filled with fresh blackberries and cherries with hints of mint and cedar.  It is very well-structured, rich and generous, waiting to be admired throughout its long, lingering finish.  You just have to taste the fresh style of Brigaldara, the result of Stefano Cesari's passion for wines from Valpolicella!
Velenosi Il Brecciarolo 2007
$19.99 a bottle, $203.88 for a case, or $16.99 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Il Brecciarolo [Eel breTCH ee R o low] refers to the broken stones typical of the soils in the area of Tuscany where the grapes for this wine are grown.  The heartiness of the Montepulciano grape dominates while the Sangiovese lifts the aromatics and brightens the wine.  It has a lovely soft palate, with tannins giving the wine structure, but are so soft and refined they almost feel creamy.  The flavors and tannins are perfectly balanced with the great acidity that follows through the finish.  A long standing favorite at Tewksbury Fine Wine, you just have to try it!

Wines for Friday's Tasting:

Pra Soave Classico 2008
$17.99 a bottle, $183.48 for a case, or $15.29 a bottle as part of a mixed case

One of our featured wines for August.  For a complete description, see the column to the left.

 Domaine de la Citadelle
Le Chataignier Rosé 2008

$15.99 a bottle, $163.08 for a case, or $13.59 a bottle as part of a mixed a case.

This is a favorite rosé for Tewksbury Fine Wine and this domaine is making its 4th appearance in our store with this vintage.  Yes, of course it is dry!  It has lovely red fruit on the palate and is balanced with nice, crisp acidity - very refreshing!  It comes from vineyards that are organicially farmed and is a blend of Grenache and Syrah - two of Provence's favorites.  I just love it!

Podere la Vigna Rosso di Montalcino 2006
$22.99 a bottle, $234.48 for a case, or $19.54 a bottle as part of a mixed case

One of the great things about a Rosso di Montalcino is that it is ready to drink now and can be enjoyed while the Brunellos age in the cellar.  This Rosso di Montalcino exhibits a rich bouquet of wild fruit with round tannins.  100% Sangiovese grown on their estate properties the wine ages in French oak for 6 months and atleast addtional 4 months in bottle before being released. Podere la Vigna is a terrific producer from Montalcino and their 2004 Brunello, which just released, scored 95 points!  Yes, we have that wine too!
