Greetings!
It looks like we are going to have a real summertime weekend! So our timing for Grilling Part 2 is perfect! This week's focus is grilled meat. Usually when pairing meats, especially beef with wine we think red wine. Why is that? The answer has to do with the weight of the food and the body of the wine, but for the rest of the answer we have to turn to science. Beef and other red meats are full of protein and red wine is full of tannins. When paired together, the tannins bind with the protein making them softer. The result is the meat and the red wine are a delicious match. Since white wine has little to no tannins, they tend not to pair as well. But, in wine there are exceptions to every rule! Remember the most important rule we introduced a couple of weeks ago: eat what you like and drink what you like. This weekend we encourage you to try something different and, of course, we have a few suggestions:
- Grilled Pork Chops, marinated with lots of lemon zest would be a terrific choice paired with a white wine. To pick up the citrus flavor try the Domaine Martin Sancerre Chavignol 2007 ($21.99) that we are tasting on Friday night. If you prefer a classic Chardonnay, try the Talbott Logan we are featuring this month. The fruit is Sleepy Hollow Vineyard and the price is $19.99.
- Grilled Steak topped with Chimichurri. Chimichurri from Argentina just bursts with flavor. Top a steak with this sauce and an Argentinian Malbec will pair beautifully. Just try the Fabre Montmayou Gran Reserva Malbec 2007 at $24.99 that is featured this Friday and you'll want to tango on the deck!
- Barbecued Beef Ribs with lots of barbecue sauce makes me think of barbecue cook offs or should I say "throw downs". For pairing, play off the spiciness and juiciness of this entree by drinking a delicious Zinfandel. Of course we have a new one for you to try ... the Victory Vineyard's "Parcel 31" Zinfandel 2007 at $19.99. It will be featured during Friday night's wine tasting!
- Grilled, roasted leg of lamb. A leg of lamb coated with Herbes de Provence and studded with garlic makes my mouth water. A Bordeaux or a Rhone blend would be delicious paired with the lamb. We think you should try the Chateau Lagrave-Aubert Cotes de Castillon 2005 or one of the three 2007 Cotes du Rhones all priced around fifteen dollars.
Picking the perfect wine for grilling can be a lot of fun. If you are having some friends over, try a few different combinations to see what you really like. We can put together a case including each of these featured wines for you to try at an incredible price of $187.37 plus tax! We look forward to seeing you and helping you choose those perfect bottles or case for your summer grilling meals!

Domaine Yves Martin Sancerre Chavignol 2007 $21.99 a bottle, $ for a case, or $ a bottle as part of a mixed case
When we tasted this wine last week we thought it was just delicious and we couldn't wait until we could share it with you! It's from Chavignol within Sancerre and without a doubt is an incredible value!! Domaine Yves Martin is a family run estate, with Karine Lauverjat firmly in command, producing classic, medium weight Sancerre that strikes the perfect balance of citrus and melon. Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc in a classic Loire Valley style, the wine combines fruit with minerality beautifully. With a crisp, dry finish, it leaves you wanting more! This is a terrific summer wine to be enjoyed as an apperitif, with summer salads, seafood, goat cheese, and those lemony grilled pork chops we mentioned earlier! I had this last week for my birthday dinner, and now it's my house white!

Fabre Montmayou Gran Reserva Malbec 2007 $24.99 a bottle, $254.88 for a case, or $21.24 a bottle as part of a mixed case
We thought with the weather expected this weekend and all the grills that will be lit, that you really should try this wine. It is delicious and perfect for grilled red meats! Robert Parker agreed, awarded the wine 92 points, and said, "Red color with shiny violet tones. Very complex and elegant bouquet. Plenty of wild red fruits like blackberries and cherries, liquorish and delicate hints of flowers. On the palate, the wine shows a remarkable balance with very elegant, delicate and silky tannins. This wine is velvet. Great combined with red meats, games, rich cheeses, and chocolate."

Victory Vineyards "Parcel 31" Zinfandel 2007 $19.99 a bottle, $203.88 for a case, or $16.99 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Another old vine (old vines add a lot of complexity) juicy Zinfandel just in time for grilling! This is a quintessential Zin, offering a bouquet of raspberries, cherries and roses. The bouquet is backed up by layer after layer of cherries and raspberries that coat the palate. The wine has great body, pure Zinfandel characteristics and is very concentrated. It is delicious now and you could put a few away for a couple of years, it will only improve.

June Wines of the Month:
Huia Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008 $22.99 a bottle, $234.48 for a case, or $19.54 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Huia
Vineyards has an enviable reputation in New Zealand, and with the 2008
they show off that reputation. This wine shows a good aromatic
intensity with bright herbaceous notes, ripe citrus, and just a touch
of the New Zealand gosseberry (but definitely not too much). It is
layered with flavors ranging from passionfruit, melon and pineapple to
lemon zest and shows an excellent length and depth on the palate. It
is delicious with fish and seafood. We love this wine!
Talbot Logan Monterey Chardonnay 2007 $19.99 a bottle, $203.88 for a case, or $16.99 a bottle as part of a mixed case
The
2007 vintage of Logan displays the appealing qualities that have come
to define this wine. In the bouquet, aromas of kiwi and guava mingle
with notes of vanilla and toast. On the palate, the wine displays a
rich mouthfeel, excellent structure and good balance. The initial
impression offers lush tropical fruit followed by a citrus and mineral
mid-palate and a long, satisfying brioche finish. Sounds tempting ...
doesn't it! It's going fast and you don't want to miss out!
Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Toscana IGT 2006 $12.99 a bottle, $132.48 for a case, or $11.04 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Known
for delivering wines that exemplify the quality potential of the
Montalcino region of Tuscany, Ciacci wines are real pleasers. The
Toscana IGT is their everyday wine just waiting to be paired with
something delicious. Fruity, lightly herbal with hints of spice, this
wine is ready to be enjoyed. It is full bodied, soft and balanced,
crafted as a blend of mostly Sangiovese.
Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur Champigny Rouge 2008 $19.99 a bottle, $203.88 for a case, or $16.99 a bottle as part of a mixed case
This
is a must try, and is a wonderful wine for the summer. Very accessible
which means easy to drink in wine-speak! It is supple and silky, is a
dark garnet in color with an intense nose of red-berry fruits and a
whiff of cocoa. Gorgeous! At only 12.5% alcohol, it is perfect for
lunches and entertaining in the afternoon too! The palate is
mouth-filling and deliciously packed with raspberries and chocolate
notes.
