Greetings!
Let's fire up that grill and pick some wines to go with our summer meals. This week we are focusing on options for chicken and fish on the grill. (Don't worry, we'll feature meats next week.) Making that perfect pairing may seem like a daunting task, but we are here to help. The most important thing to remember is to eat what you like, and drink what you like. Sure there are some wines that pair beautifully with certain foods, but the bottom line is you have to like it! Here are a few selections based on what we saw at the market this week...
- Cedar Planked Salmon. Wild salmon is running in Alaska and is delicious on the grill. Marinated with white wine and lemon then grilled on cedar is just delicious. And yes, it is even better when paired with the Huia Sauvignon Blanc featured this month!
- Grilled Tuna! Now we're talking. Grilled tuna is very versatile and will be delicious with the J Hosttater Pinot Blanc, the crisp Keller Estate Chardonnay (we are tasting Friday night), or perhaps the Etude Pinot Noir (also part of the tasting on Friday night). If you are preparing seared rare tuna, then jump in with a Cabernet Sauvignon like the Hardin or Von Strasser, or maybe a spicy Syrah or Shiraz from Australia!
- A little shellfish ..... Grilled Shrimp served with a mango salsa that has an underlying note of red onion would be absolutely delicious, especially with the Rafael Palacios Louro that we are featuring Friday night. Our friend Brian would be happy to provide recipes if you are interested!
- Barbecue Chicken is a summer classic. With barbecue chicken I like to play off the spicy notes in the sauce and pair it with a Grenache or a Grenache based blend - think Domaine de Pelaquie and Delas Cotes du Rhone or go Italian with a Barbera, perhaps the Baravalle Barbera d'Asti.
- Grilled Chicken Breast over Field Greens with a Raspberry Vinaigrette is delicious for a late afternoon lunch or a light supper. Pair it with the Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur Champigny featured this month and be delighted.
There are many delicious combinations to explore. If you are looking for something new to try, we are here to help guide you with your selection. We look forward to seeing you and helping you choose those perfect bottles or case!

Featured Wines of the Month - June
|
Huia Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008 $22.99 a bottle, $234.48 for a case, or $19.54 a bottle as part of a mixed case
A new vintage has arrived and with it came a new lower price. Yes that is correct with all the fluctuations in the markets this one has worked in our favor and we can offer this wine to you now at a lower price!!! Hurray... no it's Huia (pronounced "HOO-yah")!
Huia Vineyards has an enviable reputation in New Zealand, particularly for their aromatic dry whites and with the 2008 they show off that reputation. This wine shows a good aromatic intensity with bright herbaceous notes, ripe citrus, and just a touch of the New Zealand gosseberry (but definitely not too much). It is layered with flavors ranging from passionfruit, melon and pineapple to lemon zest and shows an excellent length and depth on the palate. It is delicious with fish and seafood. We love this wine!

Talbott Logan Monterey Chardonnay 2007 $19.99 a bottle, $203.88 for a case, or $16.99 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Sometimes, no matter what the season, a Chardonnay is just perfect. And this one is just perfect for this time of the year. This is the fourth vintage of Talbott's Logan Chardonnay that we are offering in the store. The 2007 vintage of Logan displays the appealing qualities that have come to define this wine. The color is medium-straw with great clarity. In the bouquet, aromas of kiwi and guava mingle with notes of vanilla and toast. On the palate, the wine displays a rich mouthfeel, excellent structure and good balance. The initial impression offers lush tropical fruit followed by a citrus and mineral mid-palate and a long, satisfying brioche finish. Sounds tempting ... doesn't it! It's going fast and you don't want to miss out!

Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Toscana IGT 2006 $12.99 a bottle, $132.48 for a case, or $11.04 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Wines have been crafted from the vineyards of Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona in Montalcino for over four centuries. Known for delivering wines that exemplify the quality potential of the Montalcino region of Tuscany, their wines are real pleasers. The Toscana IGT is their everyday wine just waiting to be paired with something delicious. This wine can be paired with a wide variety of foods. Fruity, lightly herbal with hints of spice, this wine is ready to be enjoyed. It is full bodied, soft and balanced, crafted as a blend of mostly Sangiovese. This is a terrific buy from a very well regarded estate. And, if you are looking for their delicious 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna di Pianrosso, it has arrived, too!

Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur Champigny Rouge 2008 $19.99 a bottle, $203.88 for a case, or $16.99 a bottle as part of a mixed case
We have found a winner red for the season from the Loire Valley, summer home to the Kings and Queens of France. We think you should drink like a King or Queen every day. This is a must try, and is a wonderful wine for the summer. Very accessible which means easy to drink in wine-speak! It is supple and silky, is a dark garnet in color with an intense nose of red-berry fruits and a whiff of cocoa. Gorgeous! At only 12.5% alcohol, it is perfect for lunches and entertaining in the afternoon too! The palate is mouth-filling and deliciously packed with raspberries and chocolate notes. You deserve to be treated like royalty!

Wines for Friday's Tasting:
Rafael Palacios Louro do Bolo Valdeooras Blanco 2007 $22.99 a bottle, $234.48 for a case, or $19.54 a bottle as part of a mixed case
An absolutely delicious find from Spain! 92 points, International Wine Cellar "Hazy chartreuse color. Explosively aromatic nose projects a sexy bouquet of mineral-driven citrus and pear aromas, along with pungent flowers, smoky minerals and white pepper. Juicy pear and lime flavors stain the palate and are given an exotic quality by floral honey, chalk and anise nuances. The mineral character expands on the strikingly energetic and long finish. Impressive."
Keller Estate Oro de Plato Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2006 $29.99 a bottle, $305.88 for a case, or $25.49 a bottle as part of a mixed case
In Spanish, Oro De Plata means "silver from gold". At Keller Estate, the name refers to the stainless steel fermented Chardonnay, crafted to highlight the flavors of the grape, yet without the characteristics of oak so often found in California Chardonnays. A Chardonnay with a Burgundian flair, this wine shares the minerality found in Chablis, but with brighter, richer, more floral characteristics. You won't find any oak, vanilla or buttery characteristics here. Instead, what you have is a pure expression of Chardonnay fruit.
Etude Pinot Noir 2006 $39.99 a bottle, $407.88 for a case, or $33.99 a bottle as part of a mixed case
Their goal is to produce a distinctly styled Pinot Noir of the highest quality, a wine that can satisfy any "Burgundian" urge and yet be proud of its California roots. With a rich and vivid hue, the wine offers inviting and expressive aromas of fruit spice, red fruits, minerality and a soft, earthy note. Beautifully structured, the palate bursts with lifted flavors of black cherry, black plum and perfume. The lush fruit combined with the baking spice notes from aging in French oak broadens the mouthfeel and gives this full and rich wine definition and length.
