The excitement begins!
March 12th, 2009
Greetings!

Next week is going to be a busy one.  Saint Patrick's Day is always fun and there's going to be several parties this weekend to start the celebration.  Will you be wearing green?  Drinking green beer?  Not me.  I love Black and Tans - Bass Ale and Guinness Stout.  I have a competition with a couple of friends every year.  I drank 6 for the last two years in a row.  Can I do a "threepeat"? (I love using that word!)

Selection Sunday is this Sunday and the games start Tuesday.  Who's makin' the Tournament?  Who will be the Cinderella Team?  And of course, most important, our first Wine Friday is tomorrow night!  I can't wait. It's going to be great!!!

To keep the excitement going we are introducing something new this month.
We are embarking on "Featured Wines of the Month".  For March, the wines are described below and are in the shop, on the shelves, stacked and ready for drinkin'.  They are all fantastic and all under $20!

Moreover, next time you're in the store, don't forget to check out our new "last chance bin".  It has some single bottles of wines left over from past vintages that are delicious and no longer available.   At a special savings of 20%, they are going fast!

Featured Wines of the Month - March
Quattro Mani Toh-kai 2007
$14.99 a bottle, $152.88 for a case, or $12.74 a bottle as part of a mixed case

This is a perfect wine for coiffing and enjoying with dinners as we lean into Spring.  Fresh and crisp with good acidity, this dry white delivers fruit with a touch of minerality.  Quattro Mani, or "four hands", represents four celebrity winemakers each who express the character and strength of indigenous grape varieties interpreted through their unique personalities.  The choice to use only native varieties reflects their belief that the essence of a region can be best expressed through traditional varieties placed in the hands of skilled artisan winemakers. Quattro Mani wines are always produced from estate grown fruit grown using sustainable agriculture and are bottled at the source.

This is easy, fun drinking white, versatile and delicious.

Terras de Alter Branco Fado 2007
$10.99 a bottle, $112.08 for a case, or $9.34 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Portugal has some terrific finds when you start to look there.  What makes it really different is that they kept with their traditions and use indigenous grapes.  Often you will see labels from Portugal that might look a bit unfamiliar, but once you taste them you will realize that these wines are very tasty, they're  structured beautifully and are a bargain!   Get to know these blends better.  This one, in particular, is a terrific blend of the native Portuguese white grapes Anta Vaz and Roupeiro from the Alentajano region.  It is crisp, dry and bright.  It's got some depth of fruit flavors with a touch of minerality that makes it just terrific to sip. I'm telling you this one is "easy-peasy" drinking.   And what a value!  At this price it makes sense to buy a case to enjoy throughout the Spring and Summer.
Fattoria Tregole Chianti Classico 2004
$18.99 a bottle, $193.68 for a case, or $16.14 a bottle as part of a mixed case

Everything you want from a classic Chianti, rich red berry and cherry fruit with a touch of earthiness that makes you want to be in Tuscany right now.  This is a terrific food wine with just the right balance of tannins and acidity.  Just what Chianti is supposed to be.  We bought the close-out. This wine should retail for $24.99. Please take note, this is a 2004!  It will balance tomato sauces beautifully and was a terrific compliment to chicken cooked with peppers and onions.  I think this one is a real winner!
Klinker Brick Old Vine Zinfandel 2006
$19.99 a bottle, $203.88 for a case, or $16.99 a bottle as part of a mixed case

This wine is popular because it's sooo good. Old Vine, Lodi fruit, up-front juiciness, hints of pepper and spice... big, extracted Zin.  We  had to include it in this month's featured wines!  If you like this style, and you haven't tried it, there is no excuse. Perfect for a steak on the grill, barbecued chicken or RIBS.

I love it.

Wines for Friday's Tasting:

Bianco di Casamatta 2007
 $14.99 a bottle, $152.88 for a case, or $12.74 a bottle as part of a mixed case

You have loved the red Casamatta, come on down and try the white.  The Bianco di Casamatta is made from 100% Vermentino grown along the Tuscan coast.  Bibi Graetz knows what he is doing.

Pessagno Central Avenue Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006
$24.99 a bottle, $254.88 for a case, or $21.24 a bottle as part of a mixed case

You asked us for a less expensive Pinot Noir, and we found it! Pessagno is one of those little gems that always over delivers. We love the Sleepy Hollow Chard at 29.99 so we figured we'd try the Pinot.  It's delicious!  This is a single vineyard Pinot from Monterey County, it's delicate with floral and violet aromas followed by bright cherry fruit flavors.

Bodega Renacer Enamore 2007
$39.99 a bottle, $407.88 for a case, or $33.99 a bottle as part of a mixed case purchase

Scramble the letters in AMARONE and you get ENAMORE! An exciting, innovative wine produced from a blend of Malbec, Syrah, Bonarda and Cabernet Franc uniquely dried and vinified in the Amarone style. This is a joint venture from Allegrini and Renacer, two top producers form their respective regions. They did their homework and it paid off beautifully. This is a world class Amarone style wine at a bargain price.
Enjoy!
