Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's Church:
"I call you friends," Jesus says in the Gospel for the Sixth Sunday of Easter. Christ's friendship with us takes a "greater love" which doesn't come cheap. To make us God's friendship, Christ "lays down [his] life." The purpose of God's friendship with us in Christ is not cheap either: "Love one another." To enfold us in that love, the crucified and risen Christ is with us on this Easter day.
Felix Hidemi Tojima-Gresh becomes Christ's friend - and ours! - this Sunday. He will be baptized into the death and resurrection at the 11:00 a.m. mass.
At 9:30 a.m. this Sunday (note time change), New York Times best-selling author Judith Dupr will begin a two-part series entitled "Mary in the Movies." Included is the magnificent 2001 volume "Churches" which has photos and commentary on The Chapel of the Good Shepherd at Saint Peter's Church. We are honored to have Judith with us. We expect a crowd. I encourage you to attend these May 13 and May 20 fora!
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 17-19, the Metropolitan New York Synod will hold its annual Assembly in Tarrytown, New York. Our lay voting members are Christopher Vergara and Edward Wagner. Pastor Stahler and I must attend. Jackie Mize-Baker, as an Associate in Ministry is a voting member. Maria Del Toro, our synod vice president, assistants to the bishop Kathy Schmidt and Pastor Jonathan Linman will also attend. Except for Kathy Schmidt, all of us are voting members. The synod's mission strategy, a new process for the selection of nominees in the election of a bishop and a process for determining the viability of congregations are all action items on the agenda. Please keep our synod assembly in your prayers this week.
The week will be crowned with our annual Memorial Vespers at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 19. This year our choir, orchestra and the Gregg Smith Singers will present the music of Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704).
The joy before us includes The Fiftieth Day of Easter, Pentecost, on May 27; the First Sunday after Pentecost - the Holy Trinity - on June 3 and our annual congregational meeting following a bilingual mass on June 10. These will bring an end to the 150th program year of Saint Peter's Church and inaugurate our 150th anniversary celebrations: Deeply Rooted. Always Growing.
The Prayer of the Day calls God's gifts in Christ "joys beyond all understanding." That's exactly what we celebrate in the mass and in all our "life at the Intersection." Alleluia!
Peace and Joy,
Amandus J. Derr
Senior Pastor

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE |
YES, I WANT TO HELP CONQUER MALARIA!
Pastor Carol Fryer, Director of Spiritual Care and Church Relations at The Wartburg and pastor of United Lutheran Church, is returning to Tanzania, this time to help raise $100,000 for the ELCA's Malaria Campaign (elca.org/malaria) through a charity climb of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain at 19,340 feet above sea level. To support Carol and fight malaria, give securely online at mnys.org/make_a_gift and designate "Kilimanjaro Climb."
THE MOMENTUM PROJECT The Momentum Project continues to serve all those with food security issues: the disabled, the unemployed, the homeless, seniors, families with children, and those enduring serious illnesses. Due to severe budget cuts, volunteers are needed for the lunch and dinner program on Tuesdays at Saint Peter's Church: Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for lunch. Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for dinner. If you would like to help with the catering staff and make a difference in your community, please call the Momentum Volunteer Manager, Charles Vaccaro, at 212-691-8100 extension 2104.
SAINT PETER'S BREAKFAST PROGRAM On Tuesday 155 guests were fed this past Tuesday. So far, we've served 3,100 guests in 2012. 7,643 guests were served in 2011. To volunteer, come to the front desk between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday mornings. |
