Articles and Ideas Advancing Our Work

Natural vs. Unnatural Ways of Working
In this post, Allison sites Bob Hughes' findings on foundation effectiveness which indicate the following:

  • Only half of the CEO's report a shared understanding among the Board, CEO, and the staff of the foundation's goals
  • A majority don't have a logic model
  • Just one-fourth use performance indicators to assess all their strategies.
Allison suggests that perhaps foundations find it a challenge to fall-in-line with these outcome measures simply because their methods of implementation go against their natural instincts.  Check out  her interesting and thought provoking insights.

Hottest Funding Opportunities and Ideas

Arbor Brothers Grant Description
Arbor Brothers is a new organization founded by two old friends
employing a model of engaged philanthropy. As the next step in its development, Arbor Brothers is offering a monetary and technical assistance grant this winter to a non-profit organization working to foster opportunity in under-served New York communities.

The grant offered is composed of two parts: a one-time $15,000 contribution and a discrete consulting project totaling approximately 100 hours. While the financial support may be tied to the specific consulting project, it needn't be. Arbor Brothers believes many organizations benefit considerably from the budget flexibility afforded by unrestricted funding.

Applicants Must:
· Have 501(c)3 status
· Be located within the five boroughs of New York City
· Have an annual budget of $75,000 - $2,000,000
· Have an observable program offering in place

Due January 29, 2010
Email arborbrothers@gmail.com for a full grant description and application instructions.

2010 Predictions

With State budgets lagging, government funding lessening, and organizations with barely a month of cashflow, John Brothers agrees that the forecast for economic recovery in the nonprofit sector is not so great.

But by openly sharing our assets and needs, we can find new ways to partner and collaborate to help strengthen our fellow do-gooders through the long process.
