Red Beans & Rice is a weekly e-mail of interesting articles, funding resources, professional development opportunities and other areas that Cuidiu has come across the previous week related to the nonprofit and philanthropic sector. Each day we receive hundreds of e-mails, RSS feeds and blog postings and this is our attempt to synthesize all of this into the most useful information for you. We look forward to sharing this information with those who we know closely and those whom we have shared only a relationship through e-mail.
Please let us know what information you find most useful and please forward this information to your colleagues, board members and friends. The reason for the name Red Beans & Rice originates from Louie Armstrong and how he signed his letters. According to some he meant it as a kind gesture to grow stronger.
Even with a decline in direct corporate funding this year, there is a new trend in corporate in-kind giving. Companies encourage employees to volunteer and are hosting more volunteer events.
"Back-to-school marks a new season of volunteering. Parents jump into
service in the classroom or for Scouts and sports leagues.
Service-learning activities are launched, community action teams
prepare for hurricane and flu season and nonprofits of all types
ramp-up their fundraising and activities."
"The National Learn and Serve Challenge launches next month on October 5, 2009. Students from around the country will participate in a concentrated week of special events and community service activities."
"We want to be more generous to the organizations that will help us
achieve what we want to achieve. It will help them spend less time on
fund-raising and more time on getting done what we want to get done.''
"Starting now, nonprofits with an annual operating
budget of up to $50,000 can purchase one license of GIftWorks Standard
through Techsoup for only $25."
The Fund exists to make grants to local educational agencies, including
charter schools, and nonprofits working with such agencies in order to
bring to scale innovative educational practices.

There is a growing mantra in the nonprofit world to explore
collaboration and cooperation these days, perhaps even mergers, in
light of the economy. It's one of the main ideas behind the new New
Mexico Office of Philanthropic Outreach as well.

Employees of nonprofits represent the 4th largest workforce in America, and yet the healthcare reform bill still fails to address the rising costs for the sector. Some believe this is due to little understanding of a nonprofits' needs, to therefore develop a strategy for healthcare that would lend itself to the unique inner workings of this industry. The Johns Hopkins Nonprofit Listening Post Project recently addressed this lack of understanding by developing a survey that represents a cross section of nonprofit employer types, their employee needs, and the rising costs.
