Red Beans & Rice
Dear Friend,

Red Beans & Rice is
a weekly e-mail of interesting articles, funding resources, professional development opportunities and other areas that Cuidiu has come across the previous week related to the nonprofit and philanthropic sector.  Each day we receive hundreds of e-mails, RSS feeds and blog postings and this is our attempt to synthesize all of this into the most useful information for you. We look forward to sharing this information with those who we know closely and those whom we have shared only a relationship through e-mail.

Please let us know what information you find most useful and please forward this information to your colleagues, board members and friends.  The reason for the name Red Beans & Rice originates from Louie Armstrong and how he signed his letters.  According to some he meant it as a kind gesture to grow stronger.

The Case for Optimism

"Sure, it has been a harrowing storm. And now is no time to discount the dangers that still exist. But opening your mind to optimism can help you seize the opportunities ahead.  The U.S. economy is in such bad shape that the loss of (just) a quarter-million jobs in July was greeted as good news. Long-term unemployment and foreclosures continue to mount in the worst economic downturn since the 1930s. Health-care costs are out of control. An aging population around the globe is driving government spending through the roof. And scientists say we need an expensive crash program to fight global warming or we'll incinerate ourselves. It's little wonder that despite some positive news lately, the daily Gallup Poll on U.S. economic conditions as of Aug. 11 found that 53% of Americans think the U.S. economic outlook is getting worse (yes, even worse), vs. 42% who think it is getting better."
