UFA Co-operative Limited hopes to inspire others to help "Build a Better World"

Ottawa, August 21, 2012

The Co-operative Development Foundation (CDF) of Canada is thrilled to announce UFA Co-operative Limited's commitment of $100,000 over the next four years to the Build a Better World Campaign.

According to Jim Laverick, UFA's Chairman, "This was an easy decision and we are excited to take our support for CDF to the next level, especially during the International Year of Co-operatives. With this donation, we hope to inspire others to follow suit in supporting the efforts of CDF and the Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) in alleviating poverty through co-operative development." With a long-standing history of support for rural communities in Western Canada, UFA is extending its reach to help impoverished communities in developing countries.

The Build a Better World Campaign aims to raise $12 million in support of international co-operative development over the next four years. The campaign was inspired in part by the International Year of Co-operatives, and by the growing need for co-operatives to address poverty in the developing world. "We are delighted that UFA has chosen to be part of our campaign and supporting our efforts at such a significant level. On behalf of the people whose lives will be improved through this donation, we are very grateful," said Julie Breuer, CDF's Director of Fundraising and Operations.

According to Michael Barrett, Chair of CDF, "Co-operatives are among the most effective tools in reducing and eliminating poverty, and our long association with the international development program of the CCA has proven that time and time again through hundreds of projects in Asia, Africa and Latin America. We are excited that UFA is supporting this important initiative in such a big way and joining us as we work to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of the world's poorest people. The funds raised from this campaign will allow the CCA to more aggressively pursue innovation and excellence in co-operative poverty reduction."
