Co-op women give peace a chance  

 

It is Co-op Week in Canada, a time to celebrate our co-operative achievements. Looking beyond Canada's borders, this issue of International Dispatch delves into the many ways women's co-operatives are mediating conflict and empowering women to become peace builders. 

How and why are women and their co-operatives so successful at peace building? What are they achieving? What obstacles are they encountering along the way? 

 

Experts addressed these questions at a recent webinar organized by the Measuring the

Co-operative Difference Research Network to mark World Peace Day. They say, with co-ops, peace building starts in the home.

Co-op fish vendors, India
"Now I have the confidence to fight for what is right," says Sangeetaben, a member of the Matsyagandha Fish Vendor's Co-operative, organized by the Self Employed Women's Association in Gujarat, India. Women are using the collective voice and actions of their co-operatives to stand up for their rights and work for peace in their communities. 

 

At the webinar Co-operatives Building Pathways to Peace, gender and conflict specialist Smita Ramnarain shared her findings on the many ways women's co-operatives in India and Nepal are cultivating peace in their homes, communities and on the national stage. 

 

"Women often lack opportunities to be heard," she says, "and 

co-operatives can facilitate women's participation in the social sphere and become platforms for women collective engagement in transforming society and building peace."
