The people of Santa Emilia are trying to reclaim a part of their culture.
Poverty has robbed many communities of the time, energy, and/or resources to
dance, sing, or engage in the arts. This is tragic because the cultural roots of Nicaragua are commemorated and represented through the country's music and dances. While folk dance is used to tell colorful tales, exciting legends, and funny stories, this form of Nicaraguan art is particularly vital because it communicates the stories of their own past in their own way.
And so, in an effort to protect their heritage, there is a teacher in Santa Emilia working with the children to learn traditional dance. Most of these dances are performed as an important part of a celebration or festival.
While the teacher is helping them learn the steps, JustHope is supporting them by providing funds for a woman in the community to make their dance costumes. $30 provides the fabric and small stipend for the sewing. Click here if you would like to be a part of continuing this beautiful tradition. |
