As the old year nears its close in Nicaragua, the Nicaraguan people prepare to let go of it with the beautiful and meaningfull tradition of El Viejo.
El viejo
Weeks  before Dec. 31 arrives, families and communities stuff an old suit of men's clothing with straw.  They paint a face, and add shoes and sometimes a hat.  While stuffing the figure, they add small firecrackers to the staw stuffing.   And when he's done, they name their new friend, "El Viejo" -- the old one - and set him out.  Then, as the final days of the year go by, the family/community reflects on the events of the year that is ending...  and tuck small symbols of it's struggles, disappointments, and failures into the tucks and folds of El Viejo.
burning el viejo  burning el viejo 2
At midnight on New Year's Eve, El Viejo is set afire.  And as he pops and bumps and burns away, so does the old year--wth all it's regrets-- cleansing the way for a fresh and hopeful start of the brand new year.
As 2011 draws to a close, those of us at JustHope hope that all your disappointments and regrets go the way of El Viejo en Nicaragua...   and
We wish you a
HAPPY and HOPE-FILLED
NEW YEAR!

Highlights of 2012 PartnerDreams & Plans

  • In Chacraseca, we are in the exploration stages of a multi-partner effort to start a vocational school that will give  young people in Chacraseca some marketable skills!
  • We are also developing a sewing enterprise in Chacraseca-"Stitching Hope" that will train and equip women to combine the artistic skills of fabric art with the utilitarian skills of sewing to provide jobs for up to 30 women.
  • We'll be looking for ways to expand the music program in Chacraseca to engage more children and adults  in the joy of making music.
  •  The microcredit opportunities in Chacraseca and Santa Emilia need to be increased and diversified In Santa Emilia, we will continue to develop and enhance the high school we started this year, and
  • The primary school in Santa Emilia will get a "facelift" with at least one additional classroom.
  • The 562 families in La Flor are working on a project to build latrines near each home.  Right now many families have only a hole in the ground surrounded by trees or plastic.
  • La Flor wants to expand the new "La Flor Tienda" (Community Store) beyond selling simple household basics, to include basic grains
  •

We can do far more together

than any of us can do alone!
