HAPPY SOLSTICE!
Plants as Friends

We had a terrific spot at this year's Christmas Fair: Next to a huge table full of fantastic plants, Eva Carpenter's SEASIDE SUCCULENTS. Our little holly trees, one of whom you can see here, were very happy, as was I. The whole weekend was full of the cooling and happy energy of all those succulents, calm and clear.
I've been reading a book called IN SEARCH OF THE MEDICINE BUDDHA, by David Crow, and one thing he says in there intrigued me. Apparently, in Ayurvedic and Tibetan medicine traditions, it is believed that plants want to help us, in order to change their own levels of awareness. I don't know what I think about that, but it makes sense somehow. Plants are very willing indeed to help us, often at the sacrifice of their own lives. While this is a recurring symbolic theme in many traditions, and certainly appropriate for this season, I suspect it isn't a view held by many in the Western world. Nonetheless, plants can and do work apparent miracles of healing. Modern scientists have recently "discovered" that they communicate with each other, and by inference, with us. Animals can clearly understand what they're saying! An attitude of respect and inquiry seems appropriate, at the very least. As you see and learn more, and experience what plants can really do, that attitude turns to awe and gratitude. At least, it has for me! In this vein, it is interesting to look at what plants you are drawn to personally, which ones seem to really help you, and with what issues. Part of this approach is also letting the plant do what it knows how to do, without burdening it or yourself with an expected result. Plants really can work magic if you let them.
On a purely informational note, both Sage and Rosemary, while being often used culinary herbs, are also very helpful neurotonics. They help promote improved circulation and brain function, and an easy way to do it is to simply include some essential oil of the plant in a lotion (imagine that!), and apply it to your legs and arms. Sage is also very cleansing environmentally, so if you anticipate a busy day with lots of interaction and things to do, it can be helpful to have a little sage on your side. Sage is also good in foot baths. Both these oils should be used in sparing amounts to avoid skin irritation, but if you are careful with them, they are happy to help.

CONCEPT OF THE MONTH..... Peace and Love. The world is, kind of and at least I think, depending on all of us right now to hold those things first and foremost. Beauty and Truth, too.
The depths of the night in winter are a great time to take in the majesty of the sky and the air, and the mornings reward investigation of all the tree buds quietly furled waiting for the next solstice.
Everything we make at Kelley's Custom Creams has love and hope included, although these ingredients don't appear on the label: Hope that you will find something helpful, and love as a general restorative!
