PLANT PROFILE
Rose Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

Rose Geranium

Rose geranium is a wonderful plant, indeed.  Pretty, fragrant, easy to grow, and lots of varieties.
It not only has culinary uses- teas, scented sugars, flavored cakes and ice creams, but is a powerful helper medicinally.

Long used in perfumery, the scent of rose geranium is lemony and rose-like simultaneously, even in varieties like Geranium Robert, which has a deeper more herbal scent as well.  This very pleasant scent belies the strength of its actions, however.    Long used for healing in India and parts of Africa, Rose Geranium is  antiseptic, calming, pain relieving, anti-spasmodic, insect repelling,  and astringent.  It has been proven to be both healing and pain relieving in viral disorders such as shingles and HIV related issues (AMERICAN BOTANICAL COUNCIL monograph), and is indicated for hormonal balancing during menopause, as well as in treating endometriosis.  It is helpful in conditions such as IBS, in diffusers and baths,  for its anti-spasmodic and nervine actions.  A general mood lifter, it is wonderful in sprays and diffusion for general use.  (COMPLETE BOOK OF ESSENTIAL OILS AND AROMATHERAPY, V. Worwood, and AYURVEDA AND AROMATHERAPY,  L. and B. Miller) Rose geranium is excellent for the skin as well, nourishing and tightening and giving you a "glow".

I myself found it to be a powerful remedy indeed when my beloved parrot Rio was diagnosed with cancer.  I had just read some research on Rose Geranium indicating potential anti-tumor action, when my vet  told me Rio had about two weeks to live and recommended I put him to sleep.  I decided to try my own remedies for a short while and see if anything improved before taking the final step.  I put two drops of rose geranium oil in his water container (which held 2.5 cups of water) daily.   Later I added various flower essences as well, and Rio not only improved but lived for another year and a half, contentedly.   (In fact I think it is fair to say that he coached me through much of my herbal study, since his cage was by my study area and I often found myself reading things to him, and having him come closer to listen and occasionally say something.)  So, in addition to its utility as a bug repellant in baths, this is another potential area for use if you have ailing pets.

Rose geranium is definitely a plant that shows you can have your cake and eat it too!
