CHOOSING A REMEDY
Checking sources and learning about Basil

basil/ocimum basilicum

I've been thinking lately about what goes into deciding on a remedy, or what to do in a given situation, specifically here relating to your health.  There are certainly many options,  many opinions, and the thing of it is to decide which one is right for YOU.  For example, take Chiropractic treatment.  My stepfather gets tremendous help and relief from his Chiropractor.  I, on the other hand, feel completely unbalanced and uncomfortable after a session.  He would recommend it because it is a good thing for him.  I don't have a good experience with it, and as a result might not- except for the fact that I know we all have to try a lot of things to find what works for us.  Which leads us to our friend basil (Ocimum basilicum, above, accompanied by a very good friend, below, a tomato, to keep it company).  After deciding to write about basil this month because I love it so much, my research showed information similar to the Chiropractic Quandary referred to above.tomato

The GERMAN COMMISSION E MONOGRAPHS, the PDR FOR HERBAL MEDICINES, and ESSENTIAL OIL SAFETY (Tisserand and Balacs) all say that basil is unsafe to use therapeutically (i.e. at high concentration) as it contains ingredients that may be carcinogenic.  (I wonder why they don't say the same things about cold medicines containing aspartame, or body products with parabens in them.  However, I digress and our Editor, above, doesn't allow disgressions unless they are about Honey.) Certainly pregnant or nursing women should be extremely careful in its medicinal use, and probably to be prudent, avoid it at such times.  However basil has centuries of use and application in herbal treatment and, indeed, is a wonderful and helpful plant.  We're all familiar with it in culinary uses, where it is delightful and completely safe.  Where would we be without pesto?  Lost, if you ask me.  The food uses address one of basil's primary features, the aiding of digestion.  As an essential oil (as is true of most essential oils), basil should not be ingested, and be quite carefully used topically.  As an inhalation, however, not only does it smell heavenly, it has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-spasmodic, pain relieving and vein decongesting properties (375 ESSENTIAL OILS AND HYDROSOLS, Jeanne Rose).  Energetically, basil helps us take action grounded in the spirit and in joy.  It opens the sinus and thymus energies so we can breathe in life's vitality: Prana. (VIBRATIONAL HEALING, Deborah Eidson)  It is a wonderful inhaled remedy, combined with mugwort (another favorite of mine and another oil about which a great deal of misinformation abounds) to deal with migraines.   A little research and a little common sense would tell you it is OK to use basil, in my opinion.  You won't regret it if you do.  (Plus you can always ask me if you have questions!)
