Iowa City Community Leader Day!
April 22, 2010

In the 1970s, local community leaders hosted an annual "Civic Day" where local Scouts could shadow various leaders throughout the day. This successful program gave the future leaders of our nation the opportunity to see what it takes to run a city or business as well as provided scouts with exposure to potential careers. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America in 2010, the Old Capitol Valley District is proud to again hold a community leader day.

Scouts will have the unique opportunity to partner with civic and business leaders in the Coralville, Iowa City, and North Liberty area. Each scout will be partnered with a local leader and will see what it takes to keep our communities running and thriving. The event will conclude with a luncheon at the Iowa City Rotary Club where scouts can meet other local leaders.

Local Scouts Getting Ready for National Jamboree!100th Anniv logo

Every five years the National Council works with local leadership to deliver a memorable experience at the National Jamboree.  This year is a special year with the Centennial of our great movement upon us.

The 2010 National Jamboree will be held at Fort A.P. Hill Virginia and the Hawkeye Area Council will be well represented with over 100 Scouts and adult leaders comprising three full troops!  For perspective, this is a large contingent for a council our size.  The National Jamboree will run from July 26th to August 4th.

Many adult leaders from our great council have also been chosen to work on the Jamboree staff.  These people were chosen after a formal application and screening process to work behind the scenes to make this year's Jamboree the most fun ever!

Four (4) youth spots are still available for the Hawkeye Area Council contingent to the Jamboree.  Please call David or Susan at the Council Service Center for more information at (319) 862-0541.

Rededication of Veterans Memorial Campfire Ring Scheduled

Have you been out to Camp Waubeek lately?  If you have been out near the great Hanford Lodge the last few years you have seen the wonderful Veterans Memorial Campfire Ring.  This Ring honors all of those who have served our country.  Many people have chosen to honor a loved one both currently serving or have served in the Armed Forces.

This year's Centennial dedication is scheduled for Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 11:11 a.m.  It will be held at Camp Waubeek on Boy Scouts Road, north of Whittier.

If you would be interested in adding a name to the Ring, please contact Anita for more information at the Council Service Center (319) 862-0541.
Does the thought of a "Pinewood Derby" bring back memories?

You remember putting your car together! Right?  The smell of the pine, the sound of the saw and the little things you did to make your car ..just right!

Now imagine the hundreds, no - thousands, of Hawkeye Area Council youth who do that same memory making every year!  We invite you to come out and watch the Three Rivers District Pinewood Derby at Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids.  The date is Saturday, April 24th and the racing begins at 9 a.m. Come watch the greatest cars race and best of all, check out the smiles on young boys' faces as they "Do Their Best!"
