2009 Silver BeaversFour Honored with Silver Beaver Distinction

At the January 23 recognition dinner, four oustanding Scouting and community volunteers were honored with the highest distinction that can be given by any Council - the Silver Beaver award.

2009 Silver Beaver honorees are:

Helen Arnold - Helen has been and continues to be a distinguished volunteer for dozens of community organizations and needs. Her Scouting dedication includes service with Den 1, Pack 9 and Troop 9 with her son, Eagle Scout Andy Olson. Her leadership as Council Vice President of Fundraising has been a cornerstone of recent record-setting successful years.

Gary Heishman - Gary's legacy of Scouting service is a long list including many positions with Pack and Troop 223 with his son, Eagle Scout Josh Heishman. He has also served as Cub Scout Day Camp leader, District Commissioner and with the Order of the Arrow. A Wood Badge graduate, he was Lead Adviser for the 2008 ArrowCorps 5 contingent.

Deborah Mason - Debbie's distringuished Scouting service began with the Orange County, California Council and continued with Hawkeye Area Council with Pack and Troop 560 as well as the Three Rivers District  in many sustaining roles. She is also active with many school activities as mother of seven Scouts, including three Eagle Scouts.

Carl Swedberg- Carl's passion for Scouting began as a Boy Scout in 1958. He has served in many pivotal leadership roles with Troop 360 and Crew 870 with his son, Eagle Scout Brian Swedberg. His volunteer dedication is fundamental to the Howard H. Cherry Scout Reservation and the Order of the Arrow. He is also active in many Marion community organizations.

Congratulations and thank you for your servant leadership, Helen, Gary, Deb and Carl!

PopcornPatriotsPopcorn for Patriots Dialog Continues

All who participated in this year's first Popcorn for Patriots program should be proud of the positive impact this project is having on our men and women overseas. Four e-mail messages have arrived so far at the Council office expressing the impact on one of the Iowa units in Iraq when tasty popcorn and friendly messages of support arrived.

As happens the first Saturday of every month, the next Camp Work Day at the Howard H. Cherry Scout Reservation (HHCSR) will be Saturday, February 7 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers should meet at the Shop behind the Ranger's House.

The next several months of Camp Work Days will be critical to completing the Storm Refuge Area project to enhance safety next Camping season. Read more about this project in one of Ed's Blog posts here.

Ongoing maintenance and development of the 400 acres of HHCSR  would not be possible without the hundreds of hours dedicated each year by Camp volunteers. Thank you for all you to to enable the 6,000 annual Camping experiences at HHCSR!
