Eagle logoEagle Strike Force Service in     Focus for 2009

Dear :

As post-flood rebuilding continues in Cedar Rapids, Coralville, Iowa City, Vinton, Palo and all areas served by Hawkeye Area Council, the Advancement Committee has gathered info for a project called Eagle Strike Force.

Eagle Strike Force consists of a three-fold approach in supporting the service of our Scouts:
1. Gathering initial info on potential flood-related Eagle projects throughout Hawkeye Area Council
2. Gathering contact names at flood-imapcted public entities and non-profits who are willing to receive inquiries on potential projects from potential Eagle Scouts
3. Gathering information on potential ongoing flood-related general unit service projects

The current list of this information has been posted here on the Council website. (second announcement down underneath Council Dinner). The intention of this information is a starting point for anyone wanting to work on ongoing post-flood needs.  The same Scout responsibility to lead all aspects of Eagle projects remains.

Information will be formally announced soon on matching project funding available for Linn County projects through the generosity of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation Flood 2008 Fund.

If you are aware of information that should be added to this list, please contact Dawn Svenson or call her at the Council office at (319) 862-0541 or (877)-HAWK-BSA.

As the popular time for New Year's Resolutions is  here, have you wondered how you might not be one of the 54% of Americans who are not keeping their resolutions by June of each year? Consider the time-tested training recently transformed for today's needs of Wood Badge.

Wood Badge is an unforgetable journey founded by Baden-Powell and strengthened by your fellow Scouters and program counselors.  It is designed to be a "Mountaintop Experience" for all participants. Those who agree to join the journey join 100,000 fellow Scouts who can be found in all corners of the world.

A $50 deposit and availability for the Wood Badge practical experience October 2-4 and October 16-18, 2009 are all that is needed to start your journey of a lifetime. More than eight Scouts from Hawkeye Area Council are already registered.  Scholarships are available.

Thanks to Gary McClure and his Wood Badge staff team for forging the 2009 Wood Badge path. E-mail Gary or call him at 319-364-7297 (home) or 319-521-6880 (cell) for more information to reserve your "Mountaintop Experience" today.

Council logo-smallA Salute to 2008 Volunteers
As 2008 draws to a close, we applaud and thank the 3,000 registered volunteers of Hawkeye Area Council. You all make character education and leadership development happen for the 7,000 youth we serve!

A conservative estimate of the time so generously given by our volunteers is five hours per week, 50 weeks per year. Given the level of training that Scouting volunteers go through, that time is conservatively estimated at $20 per hour. This means Hawkeye Area Council volunteers have a $15 million economic impact on our youth each year. Scouting would not happen without you!

We also pause to salute the four years of District Chairman leadership by Dave Yanksy in the Three Rivers District. Thank you, Dave for your continuous committment to the youth of Scouting!

We also welcome Randy Kopecky to his new role of District Chairman after one year as District Commissioner for Three Rivers.

We also pause to salute the two years of District Commissioner leadership by Tracy Schloss in Red Cedar District. Thank you, Tracy for your ongoing dedication to the youth of Scouting!
