Greetings!

Welcome to the premier issue of Jenike & Johanson's glass and ceramics newsletter, which focuses on bulk material handling challenges and approaches that are relevant to these industries.
ACerS Course Offering

We are pleased to announce a joint initiative with the American Ceramic Society to offer a 2 day course ACerS logoentitled "Solids Flow in Storage and Process Systems." This course will run October 22 and 23 in Columbus, Ohio, and will include the following topics:

  • Solids flow problems (e.g., arching, ratholing, flooding, segregation, etc.)
  • Solids flow patterns (e.g., funnel and mass flow)
  • Characterizing and understanding flow properties
  • Design principles of volumetric and gravimetric feeders
  • Design principles of transfer chutes
  • Typical bin design example (designing a bin based on flow properties)
  • Understanding fine powder flow phenomena
  • Segregation mechanisms and solutions
  • Hopper inserts and flow aids
  • Attendees will find out how and why typical flow problems occur, and what simple, practical steps can be taken to solve them glass segregation

Obtain more details and sign up for the course.
Note there is a limited time to take advantage of the early registration discount.
Have You Ever Had a Batch Bin Fail?

Whether your answer is yes or no, fortunately these failures typically result only in property damage, but they point out the importance of taking abrasive wear seriously.   While it is well known that glass batch is a highly abrasive material, how abrasive wear affects storage and handling equipment may not be well understood.  Therefore, we want to highlight a few points that should be considered when designing and maintaining batch storage and handling equipment for an abrasive material.

We have posted a new web page detailing items to take into consideration for batch bins.  This valuable information will help you prevent failures and property damage from happening in your plant.
