Community Volunteer Opportunities
There are many mission partners and organizations locally that offer ample opportunities to serve. The listings on the "Community Volunteer Opportunities" web page provide opportunities for you to get involved in our community. Some of the organizations represented in this list may not be mission "partners" with Lutheran Church of Hope but they are organizations we wish to support with volunteers.

Families Needed to Host Visiting Orphans:
Some local families have started a Kidsave community in Des Moines. This program brings in older orphans from Columbia, South America to stay with host families for 5 weeks during the summer and advocates to find them adoptive families during their visit. It is a very successful program as over 90% of the children are adopted. They are currently in need of several families to host orphans next summer. There will be an informational meeting on Sunday, Nov. 13, at 1:00 pm in Room 212. To find out more visit www.kidsave.org. |

As we've found during past Christmas seasons, the generosity of Hope overflows. We've partnered with several local agencies to continue "4 Ways 2 Give." Throughout the holiday season, you will have opportunities to give back to the following organizations. WAY #1: Adopt-A-Family You know Christmas is near when the Adopt-A-Family envelopes appear! Hope will again partner with Bidwell Riverside, a Christ-centered nonprofit organization, to share some of the joys of Christmas with families around the Des Moines area. Christmas 2011 marks the 57th year that the Bidwell Riverside Center has provided Christmas help to those in need. This well-honored tradition began in 1954 with the giving of 40 boxes of food to our nearby neighbors in need. Last year over 850 families were either "adopted" or sponsored by Bidwell. This year Hope plans to adopt over 400 families. Hope's partnership with Bidwell Riverside began in 2002 and has been a blessing to those who have taken part as both recipients and providers. What does it mean to adopt a family? You, your family or small group will provide gifts of toys and clothing - from a specific, suggested list. You will also provide a holiday meal and deliver all of these items to the family you select. Envelopes with family information, including the gift suggestion list, will be available beginning Nov. 23. WAY #2: Scan Away Hunger Providing hope begins with a meal for the homeless and hungry in our community. Scan Away Hunger takes place each holiday season starting after Thanksgiving and runs through Christmas. Scan Away Hunger plates will be included in the bulletins for Nov. 24, 26 and 27. Stop by participating Hy-Vee stores to scan your plate, knowing that you are playing a role in providing food, clothing, shelter and recovery support for those in need during this holiday season. Plates can also be scanned at Café Hope. All proceeds will be used by Hope Ministries to help feed and care for homeless and hungry men, women and children in central Iowa throughout the year. WAY #3: Toys for Tots Hope will be a collection site for Toys for Tots again this year. New, unwrapped toys and new books can be placed in the boxes at the main entrances. Collection boxes will be available Saturday, Dec. 3 - Sunday, Dec. 11. Reminder: Gifts for babies and teens are always greatly needed. WAY #4: Share Christmas with a Senior Too often seniors in our communities are forgotten and alone during the holidays. We want to provide a way for you to reach out to them through Share Christmas with a Senior. We are partnering with several local agencies who have identified seniors in need. Suggested gift lists will be available at the Mission Center or online beginning Dec. 3. Return unwrapped gifts to Hope by Dec. 11. For more information, click here. |

Servant Training with Samaritan's Feet
"And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other's feet." John 13:14
Our South African mission partner, Blessman Ministries, is partnering with the Samaritan's Feet organization to wash the feet of impoverished children and fit them with a new pair of shoes. Samaritan's Feet serves more than 50 countries, including the United States.
If you would like to learn more about how this organization serves and ministers to these children, attend a foot-washing training session on Friday, Nov. 11 from 6:30-9:00 pm at Valley United Methodist Church (4201 Ashworth Rd, WDM). Even if you have no plans to travel to South Africa, this training will provide you with a wonderful idea of how to humbly serve and minister to the impoverished.

Mission Uganda featured this month
There are photographs from Hope's mission trips on the east wall of the Atrium. The display will feature a new mission trip each month, and this month will be Mission Uganda.
Daily Reflection Calendar This year focuses on missions so Hope will have a monthly focus on local and worldly issues - poverty, orphans, AIDS awareness, clean water, and more. To go along with the monthly focus, there will be a daily reflection calendar here with suggestions for how you can lift up what God is doing in the world and in Des Moines. Check out the new November calendar!
