Changes announced for Cookie Ministry

The life of any ministry goes through changes. Some of the changes may be big; some may be small but important.

Cookie Ministry has been a vital part of Hope's mission to share the everlasting love of Jesus Christ for over five years. The weekly lunches have nourished the minds and bodies of thousands of Des Moines' homeless population. The boxes of bread/pastry donations that are distributed to local shelters each weekend provide much needed items to feed their residents.

Because this ministry is so important, we felt the name needed to better reflect the ministry's mission. Therefore,
we will begin using the name "Shelter Sandwich Team" for this ministry.

We are also saying goodbye to Melanie Menken who has served Cookie Ministry as coordinator since 2008. Melanie will be stepping back from her leadership role with the ministry to pursue a new and exciting leadership opportunity with BoosterPak. Thank you to Melanie for her hours of dedication to this ministry. Two leaders have stepped forward to lead Cookie Ministry - Marion Morris and Matt Olson. Marion and Matt have each been around Hope for several years and have served faithfully in the Fellowship Ministry. Welcome, Marion and Matt!

As always, if you have questions or concerns regarding the Shelter Sandwich Team ministry, you can email

sheltersandwichteam@hopewdm.org or call 422-9160. (Note the new email address.)

Photo Gallery -

Mission Appalachia featured this month

There are photographs from Hope's mission trips on the east wall of the Atrium. The display will feature a new mission trip each month - this month is Mission Appalachia (ASP). There are two Appalachia trips planned this year in June and October. Keep all the team members in your prayers.

Daily Reflection Calendar
This year focuses on missions so Hope will have a monthly focus on local and worldly issues - poverty, orphans, AIDS awareness, clean water, and more. To go along with the monthly focus, there will be a daily reflection calendar at www.hopewdm.org/missions with suggestions for how you can lift up what God is doing in the world and in Des Moines. Check out the new May calendar!

Helping our Community -
Ways that you can help some of our local mission partners

Freedom for Youth's (FFY) needs:

The big need is for handy workers and skilled volunteers with various skill sets to assist in maintenance and projects at Freedom campus, Safe Haven and the Promise House. Many of FFY's buildings and vehicles are in need of some TLC and preventative maintenance. Also, the young men and women in transitional housing would benefit from working with and learning from skilled workers. Volunteers would meet once or twice a month for coffee at the campus and discuss upcoming repairs and/or projects to be undertaken.

If interested, contact Mark at mmcgrew@freedomforyouth.org. There will be a meeting on campus at 9:00 am Thursday, May 5, for anyone interested.

Children & Family Urban Ministries' (CFUM) needs:

Volunteers

- Volunteers are needed at the Breakfast Club throughout the month of May when CFUM's college volunteers are unavailable. Power Breakfast Wednesdays are the biggest needs. Volunteers are needed between 6:30-8:30 am.

- The Haven needs volunteers Monday-Thursdays during May when college volunteers are unavailable. Volunteers are needed from 3:30-5:30 pm.

Contact Sarah at 282-3242 if you are interested in volunteering.

Back to School Health Fair

CFUM will host the 11th Annual Back-to-School Health Fair on Wednesday, July 13, from 3:00-7:00 pm. The Fair will take place in conjunction with the Moulton Extended Learning Center's Back to School Open House. Last year the event benefited over 400 students and families.

The Back-to-School Health Fair takes lots of planning and gathering and donating to pull it off.You can help by joining the Planning Team, volunteering the week before or the day of the fair, purchasing gifts cards for ice, water, supplies for the day.The first planning meetings are just beginning. To be a part of the Back-to-School Health Fair, contact Kristin Maahs at 238-8978.
