THE GOLD STANDARD PROGRAM IN ACTION

The Gold Standard Program is well into its third month and everyone participating is doing well. No doubt you've seen a few of them and you have noticed the change.

There are still some questions about the program-so, what better way for you to know more than to hear from those participating? The following is a Q&A session with a few of the participants. If you have further questions about the GSP don't hesitate to ask.

To get started we'll ask and answer the first question.

Q.  What is the GSP and how does it work?

A. The GSP is a structured, personalized program designed by a Personal Trainer with your goals and objectives in mind. There is an initial three-month commitment and then it's monthly afterward.

You will commit (as best you are able) to a 5 day per week workout. You will get a calendar with workouts for each day. Two personal training sessions are also included each month with unlimited follow up support.

The cost is only $297 for the first three months and then $99/month afterward.

Q. What prompted you to sign up for the GSP?

A. GSP looked like a well structured, yet affordable program... and I need that structure. The program includes help with proper diet as well.

A. As strange as it may sound for a person who is not very fond of routine, I really like the 5-day, 3-month commitment. I knew that the schedule would make me consistent at the gym. I also like the individualized workout calendar. You know exactly what you are going to do every day.

Q.  What things have you been doing in the GSP?

A.  There is cardio 3 times a week and strength training the other 2 days. The cardio varies from the arc machine to the bike and some treadmill with time and heart rate measurements.

A.  I have added strength training on the Freemotion weight machines and ab and back exercises to end each workout. There are also 2 one-on-one sessions with a trainer. Mine have been one on nutrition and the other a training session.

Q.  What results have you seen so far?

A.  The most important change is that I feel better. I am proud of myself because I have had the discipline to achieve the results I have seen... I have lost about 11 pounds

A.  The first month, I was just getting adjusted to coming to the gym consistently, but gained strength. The second month, I lost 4 pounds, and my strength and endurance increased greatly. I am on my third month and I feel great! My energy has increased and my muscle tone is coming back.

Q.  What is the biggest change you've had to make since beginning GSP?

A.  I believe the GSP has helped me push myself during my workouts and has offered sufficient diversity to keep the workouts interesting.

A.  Realizing that it is OK to take the time for me and making the necessary adjustments at home.

Q.  What's been the hardest thing to do on the GSP?

A.  Easy answer - the Stairmaster machine!

A.  At first, it was very hard to come exercise every day, especially after work. I'm used to it now. Maybe now the hardest part is adjusting my eating. That is still a work in progress. I've been on Weight Watchers for a while so I'm still trying to incorporate that into this program.

Q.  What would you tell others contemplating participating in the GSP?

A. I recommend the GSP for those individuals who want a structured workout with reasonable challenges that will enable you to improve your aerobic stamina and to maintain muscle tone.

A.  If you are serious about getting in shape, this is a program that will work. I'm convinced I will achieve my goals and this time keep off the extra weight and stay in shape.

A.  Get started now. The longer you wait, the more difficult it becomes.

Q.  Any other comments about the program?

A.  It almost does not feel like a "program" it is just what I do.

A.  I've known what I needed to do to get healthy but never really made the commitment to do it. At Lifestyle I have the support of a knowledgeable staff and other members who are working hard, just like me.

WINEFEST IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER

The annual fundraiser for the Montgomery County Women's Center will be held on Thursday, April 26 from 6-9 PM. As in previous years, Macy's Furniture Gallery will be the host.

You are invited to come by and find your new favorite wine by sampling selections from over 50 wineries. These fine restaurants will be serving some delicious food to go with your wine.

Last year the Women's Center provided emergency shelter to 625 women and children, provided legal services to 822 women and answered over 15,000 hotline calls. Proceeds from this event are vital to enable them to continue providing these services in our community.

If you would like to attend, see Scott. Tickets are $60 in advance and $75 at the door.

A TREE FOR ANN

Ann Stokes, a member of Lifestyle Fitness for over four years, recently lost her battle with breast cancer. She was known and loved by all who came in contact with her. We miss her.

Her friends at the club would like to plant a tree on the club grounds in her memory. If you would like to contribute to the tree fund, please see Scott or Ken for more information.

I first came to Lifestyle at Scott's invitation to those of us in the TWUMC Quest.

Goals: My goals are to maintain strength and flexibility as I age; and to lose weight-particularly around the middle of my body.

Approach:  I'm currently enrolled in the Gold Standard Program (GSP) which requires a 5 day/week commitment. The workouts emphasize aerobic exercise but include strength and core training as well. I've participated in some classes in the past but not routinely.

Results:  I've definitely gained strength and flexibility since joining Lifestyle and have increased my stamina through the aerobic exercises. Lifestyle personnel are always there to guide and direct the fitness program of my choice.  The friendly one-on-one attention you receive at Lifestyle is worth the cost of the monthly membership. I also think the Freemotion machines are easy to use and effective.

Fun facts: Much of my spare time is spent participating in my church choir activities-which I love not only because I enjoy singing but it is my way to witness and disciple others to Jesus Christ. I enjoy travel opportunities and spending time with my family, particularly with my grandson, James.
