KEN'S STORY
|
One never knows how or when a life-changing event will occur. For me it happened on August 15, when I was diagnosed with an ascending aortic dissection aneurysm and a malfunctioning aortic valve. WHAT? This wasn't supposed to happen to a fitness professional that makes a living helping others avoid the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle... consequences such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, arthritis, joint problems, depression, and HEART PROBLEMS, among others. How could this have happened? This is my story and I share it with you in the hopes that it will inspire and motivate you to take care of your body by using it and fueling it to maintain optimum fitness and health. August 15 was a relatively normal Monday morning. I was training my usual early morning clients, Donna and Martha, and we were talking about our weekends. I mentioned that I had several nights of poor sleep over the weekend, waking up a little short of breath and then falling back to sleep numerous times. I felt unusually tired during the day, but thought it was due to the poor sleep at night. In my rationalization of the situation, I believed I was having some anxiety issues and since I felt better by Monday morning, I wasn't concerned. My clients on Monday were, however, quite concerned. Donna and Martha insisted that I call my doctor. Yeah, right. Well, you can't say no to two determined women. I saw my Primary Care Physician (Dr. Craig Boudreaux, Village Medical Centers) at noon and after listening to my heart with his stethoscope he said "There's something wrong with your heart valve." That's not what I expected to hear. He conducted an EKG and ruled out a heart attack. Dr. Boudreaux was concerned enough that he immediately sent me to St. Luke's Lakeside Hospital for an echocardiogram, where doctors can "see" the heart. At Lakeside, the diagnosis was officially made... ascending aortic dissection aneurysm and a malfunctioning aortic valve. WHAT? Click here to read the full story.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
| October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month-created to raise awareness and encourage early detection and treatment of this disease. We have all been touched by breast cancer in one way or another. Tremendous progress has been made in detection and treatment, but we still have a long way to go to completely eradicate this and all other cancers.
Diet and exercise has been shown to help in the prevention of certain cancers, breast cancer being one of them. In fact we have quite a few members who have battled cancer and they attest to how important physical fitness is to their well-being. We are proud to support all those fighting this dreaded disease and look forward to the day no one comes to us to help with this fight.
Please support organizations that are working to eradicate Breast Cancer. Every life is precious and worth saving.
And, remember to schedule your mammogram-or remind your loved one.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
|
The month of October has also been designated as DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH, signified by the color purple.
Last year in Texas there were
- 196,713 domestic violence incidents
- 142 women killed by a husband or boyfriend
- 39 children who witnessed the killing of their mothers
In Montgomery County
- 3,440 Domestic Violence incidents were reported
- 2 women were killed by a husband or boyfriend
Locally the Montgomery County Women's Center works tirelessly to address the problems faced by women, children and men in our community. They do this by providing safe shelter, legal and counseling services and, perhaps most important, going into the schools to present anti-bullying, safe dating and date rape drug awareness classes.

MEMBER PROFILE - Nancy Hathaway
| I've been a member since October 2009. My friend Lenore told me about Lifestyle Fitness and brought me in. The fact that it's not huge, overwhelming, or crowded was--and still is--a big plus for me. Having diagrams and instructions on the machines, along with the printed programs to follow (including the one Shannon made just for me even before I joined) helped me feel capable of handling a workout independently. All the trainers have been so friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful, and the other members seem to be people I can relate to. I appreciate the efforts (like this member profile) to help the members become acquainted and encourage one another. And the price was right. Goals: My goal is to look and feel like I did 25 years ago! In case that doesn't work out, I will be happy with building strength and endurance, retaining flexibility and a healthy heart, and keeping my clothes size in check. I also have a couple of chronic physical conditions for which my workout is part of the management. Approach: My approach isn't as disciplined as it should be. I am in the gym 2-4 times/week, working about an hour each time. I usually spend a total of 25-30 minutes on the bike and Arc, 15-20 minutes at the weight machines, and 15-20 minutes stretching. I go to bed late and generally like 7 hours of sleep, so I haven't made my workout a first-thing-in-the-morning commitment. But I try hard to make it a priority several days each week. My husband and I are fortunate to travel often, and when we're gone, we usually do lots of walking and climbing stairs and sometimes hillsides. Being able to continue that kind of activity is a big incentive for me. I have found that if I am even somewhat serious about exercising, it's easier to make other healthful choices, like drinking more water and eating less of what I usually want but shouldn't have. (Read: "sugar and butter".) We look forward to having grandchildren one day and want to be able to play and travel with them. Results: I don't think I work hard enough to be making big differences in the way I look, but I have noticed a little more room in my clothes and more flexibility in my knees and hips (which are home to some arthritis)--especially since Scott has been cracking the whip. And although I lead a pretty busy life, I feel much more like a bum when I'm not intentional about exercising. Fun facts: I suppose some of my favorite activities are those that usually involve friends or my family. These include traveling in the U.S. and internationally, entertaining (and being entertained!), baseball games, eating together, and just sharing one another's lives and stories. I also enjoy landscaping and gardening, volunteer work, piano, music (Pandora has elevated my workout!), and various small groups (outreach, study, and social justice) within our church. |
