Unfortunately I had a heart attack on 5/15/2011. Having low cholesterol, exercising regularly, and never smoking were not enough to overcome my genetics. God's intervention was clearly seen, definitely felt, and truly amazing. The cardiac rehab specialist told me that the training and exercise that I had done at Lifestyle over the past 3 years contributed to saving my life and limiting the damage to my heart. I have two goals at this time. First, I need to continue to strengthen my heart and regain my confidence. Second, I want to lose 45 pounds, which will significantly decrease the workload on my heart. My approach: I do 40-50 minutes of cardio at least 6 days per week using the treadmill, bike, or arc. I also do strength training 2 days per week. In addition, I have changed my eating habits and adopted the American Heart Association's recommended diet including more fish (particularly Salmon), chicken, oatmeal, low fat dairy, and avocado. I have significantly reduced the amount of red meat and salt in my diet. Results: I have lost 15 pounds over the past 90 days-only 30 more to go! Thanks to exercise and medication, my latest labs showed total cholesterol of 104, LDL of 46, HDL of 42, and triglycerides of 77. Needless to say, my doctor is very pleased! Personal interests: My daughter is a freshman at Baylor and my son is a freshman at The Woodlands High School. My wife and I are enjoying this new season in our life. I have also become an expert at taking my blood pressure and counting my pills. |
